A versatile defender that has top end athleticism at third base and behind the plate. Didn’t catch during game action but turned in a very impressive workout. 1/31/16 Hughes is a very strong and athletically built prospect at 6-foot, 200-pounds. He had a very impressive day showing well at the plate and his defensive versatility. At the plate he used a leg kick load to do an excellent job of shifting weight into contact. Hands stay simple and launch through the zone in a flat path. The ball jumped off his bat in batting practice consistently producing back spin on his line drives. Ran a 4.13 down the line and produced an exit velocity of 88 mph. Behind the plate he consistently say between 1.96-2.01 with his pop times. Using quick footwork he gave himself time to gear up his arm and with clean arm action fire the ball to second base with 80 mph arm strength. Showed well in the infield also as he had athletic actions and solid arm strength across the diamond.

He fields the ball out front with his hands, bringing them into his body. He throws with a clean, short arm action coming from a ¾ slot and reached a top velocity of 77 mph. Left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance, using a leg kick back getting himself back to being squared up to even before he swings. No load with his hands, with a slightly upward bat path through the zone. He finishes high with a two-handed follow through, showing strength in his swing during his round of batting practice. He reached a top exit velocity of 87 mph and ran a good 7.07 60-yard dash time for a corner infielder/catcher.
