2/12/17 This was our first look at Kates as he has flown largely under the radar during the spring and then played his summer ball down south with the Evoshield Canes organization. It was just batting practice, but the High Point recruit couldn’t have been more impressive. An imposing presence in the box at 6-foot-3, 200-pounds, Kates showed off a smooth swing with advanced feel for the barrel, finding it on every swing he took in batting practice. His swing looks to translate to game action as he creates a ton of juice without much effort and takes a very flat path to the baseball.
10/10/2018: 6-foot-3, 200-pound left-handed hitting utility player, projectable frame, strong, athletic. Short, quick arm action, gets to release quickly, high slot. Drop and drive delivery, works on-line, lands toe-closed, finishing athletically. Fastball sat 88-89 with run. Curveball, aggressive with, 11/5 shape, depth and late bite, induced swing and miss, 73-74.
