Campus Series- St. Bonaventure (July 11, 2017)
Whitaker stands in at 5-foot-5, 123-pounds with a lean athletic frame. Ran a 4.77 home to first. Offensively- Righty sets up square to the pitcher with his feet outside shoulder width. Shows a slight knee bend holding his bat in front of the back shoulder using little pre-pitch bat movement. On pitch, his trigger is a knee raise to stride forward while his hands move back and down slightly to get into his hitting position. Uses good lower body rotation, getting whole body involved but could be more aggressive with the rotation. Shows quick hands into the hitting zone with a level barrel path throughout into a high one-handed finish. Demonstrated line drive ability up the middle and to the pull side. Will improve with added strength. Recorded an exit velocity of 72 MPH. Defensively- Good approach and footwork to get underneath baseball. Clean crow hop mechanics gaining ground throughout the process of the movement to set up in a good throwing position. Shows a good outfielder arm swing with accurate throws. Will get better as more strength develops. Recorded a positional arm velocity of 67 MPH. Pitching- Lefty sets up in the middle of the rubber with a simple side step into a leg raise above the hip crease. Breaks down well with good separation into a mid-¾ release point. Could use more of the lower half and have a stiff front side. Still gets good rotation and is set up in a good fielding position. Fastball range was 68-70 MPH and peaked at 71 MPH with arm side run. Change-up range was 63-64 MPH and needs more development with speed off the fastball, but shows good arm side sink.
