4/13/17 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander sat 89-91 topping at 92 mph in the first inning from a low 3/4 arm slot. Sat 86-88 for the majority of the game after that with significant arm-side run. Free, easy delivery that is far from max effort. Also displayed occasional feel for a changeup that sat 77-80 with heavy fade and a seldom used slider at 75-77. Command was an issue early, but managed to work through it for seven strikeouts vs. two walks on the day. Threw CG 3-hit shutout and showed ability to hold runners with 1.35 delivery time out of stretch.
8/5/16 Highly projectable frame, 6-foot-3, 190-pounds, long legs, slender build. Varying arm slots, will drop to side arm, works low 3/4 to ¾. Clean repeatable delivery, stays upright, easy no effort, little lower half, closed toe landing, stays directional. Fastball flashed plus sink, gets a ton of ground balls, showed feel for the zone, touched 88-89, sat 84-86. Changeup played with sink, similar to fastball, good feel, 76-79 mph. Slider at 73 mph, didn’t use much, 10/4 plane, showed feel in warmups.
5/17/16 Three-quarter slot with wrist wrap and otherwise clean arm action. Threw strikes with FB 78-80, touching 81, while also flipping in an 11/5 CB at 66-68 and an occasional CH at 72-73. Tended to slow body on secondary offerings and would benefit from upping tempo. [Note: it was revealed afterward that Helverson was not pitching at full strength during this outing, hence the large difference in stuff from his Future Games appearance three months later.]
