2/07/21

Physical: Athletic, long 5-foot-11, 155-pound frame with room to continue adding strength. 6.99 runner in the 60-yard dash.

Offensively: Balanced, even stance with the hands showing rhythm off of the shoulder in the setup, early leg lift stride with some rock back and forth through the backside while generating some weight shift into a stiff front side, the bat worked through a fluid and whippy, slight uphill attack with confidence in the top hand. Recorded an impressive 56% line drive rate allowing for an easy gap to gap approach at the plate, stayed behind the baseball with short and quick hands (23.70 mph hand speed) allowing him to manipulate the bat head at will based on where he was pitched. Solid hitter overall who can slot into a 1, 2, or 9 position in the batting order at the next level. Up to a 90 mph bat-exit velocity with a lot more to come in the near future.

Defensively: A super utility prospect, Whalen handled two positions at an above-average level and showed athleticism at each. The primary middle infielder showcased easy right to left actions at the fielding window with advanced rhythm in the movements. Sub-4.20 second feet and made it look easy on plays in any direction; accurate 85 mph arm strength and will stick on the left side moving forward … The outfielder got great reads off the bat where he moved with fluidity wherever the ball was hit, stayed low in the posture fielding off of the left foot with a soft, accurate glove hand giving way to a live, 89 mph arm strength with carry towards the target. Could handle two of the three outfield positions at the collegiate level.
