6'4, 185-pound, RHP shows arm strength w/ prototypical pitcher body. Tall, athletic frame w/ some present strength, lot of projection. Pitches from the full-wind up w/ present back foot on third base side of rubber w/ short rocker step. Chest high leg kick into leg drive and H ¾ release point. Glove action can be stronger to keep him on target. Repeatable w/ some effort in throw. Quick arm, projects into 90’s as frame develops. Some downhill plane. Straight FB. Medium downer CB is a slurve that flashes late break. Firm straight CH w/ arm-speed.
10/15/16 - Max FB: 86, FB: 84-86, CB: 71-73, CH: 75,
6-foot-4, 175-pound, RHP dominated with one of the most impressive outings of the entire weekend, McLaughlin continued his ascent as one of the top uncommitted pitchers in Tennessee’s 2018 class with a steady showing of command and the size and length to suggest a ton of untapped potential, he works confidently and uses a tiny rocker step before utilizing a high leg lift to get loaded at the top, creates some solid shoulder tilt before heading home with his front hip, strides mostly in line and finishes under control, long arm action comes through a high ¾ slot and works very well. Fastball showed some run with great command, curveball had 12/6 to 11/5 shape and was thrown for strikes in many counts, changeup had some fade at the plate. McLaughlin recorded 4 strikeouts in his 2 perfect innings of work.
7/26/16 - Max FB: 86, FB: 82-85, CB: 66-67, CH: 72-73,
6-foot-4, 175-pound, RHP uses a slow and very deliberate motion in which he really tries to gather himself at the top before unloading toward the plate with elbows and knees coming right at you. McLaughlin gets some good shoulder tilt and is able to create a good downhill plane on his pitches, he finishes with aggressiveness and a little bit of effort that pulls him slightly toward the 1B side, long arm action comes through a high ¾ slot. Fastball showed some run to go along with that tilt and the ability to be painted on the corners, curveball slowed his arm some, but had some good 11/5 shape and was thrown consistently for strikes, changeup was a very good pitch as it showed some sink and fade through the zone. McLaughlin struck out 4 in his 2 innings of work and earned himself a spot on Tennessee’s Future Games team with his performance. An uncommitted 2018 that is sure to draw heavy interest.
