4/15/23

The 6-foot-7, 225-pound long levered, loose-armed right-hander has heated up recently showing 93-96 heat vs Oklahoma State and 95-96 in Austin this past weekend against Texas. His fastball disappears at times, drawing swing/miss. Carsten will also mix in a cutter/slider at 84-87 and a slower breaker with slurve shape at 77-78. Despite lackluster statistics to date (5.65 ERA with 15 walks, 27 strikeouts in 28.2 innings), he is trending up and could make a big late season jump. Certainly not as big as Cade Horton’s helium last season but enough to go from a pocket follow as a JC transfer from McLennan to a mid-Day Two draft pick in July.

12/31/21

Last spring, Carsten made an immediate impact as a McLennan freshman, going 9-1 with a 3.69 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings while helping lead the program to an NJCAA Division I title. A 6-foot-7, 230-pound right-hander, Carsten can pump his heater at 90-94 with hard, late tail and sink, and it's easy to envision him adding even more velocity with physical development. An 81-83 mph slider with late diving action and a changeup with bottoming-out action comprise Carsten's secondary arsenal, and the Sooners' recruit has already shown that he can throw strikes with all three pitches.
