Slower paced delivery that builds up to some late intent. Full arm circle and throws from a low three-quarter slot with high end arm speed. Slot drops slightly at times on the secondary offerings. In the first McKay was very scattered around the zone, but settled in some during the second inning and beyond. The fastball sat 90-92, mostly 91-92, in the first inning and then faded his next two innings to the 87-90 range. The arm was a little late getting up causing the fastball to work up and to the arm side. His best and most reliable pitch on the day was the breaking ball. The breaking ball had power curve tendencies with a hard downer bite sitting at 78-81 mph. McKay also mixed in a few changeups at 78-80 mph that had gradual arm side fade. While he struggled at times to consistently find the zone, the UVA commit has some of the best, most electric stuff in the state and will definitely be an arm to check in on again as the spring progresses.
VA/DC Last Chance Open
McKay is 6-0 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, long loose quick arm action and normal to easier effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are level and closed, lands closed with an athletic finish and some recoil. Fastball was 83-85, touching 86, with hard late armside run that has some depth as well. Curveball was 76-78 with good armspeed and late gradual 11/5 break to it, has some shape, as spin tightens, bite should increase, chance to be a good pitch. Change-up was 79-80 with good armspeed and heavy armside run with some sink. Commands fastball well around the zone.
