On Thursday, September 28th, the PBR Alberta staff hosted it's second Scout Day of the fall with the Vauxhall Academy/Calgary Bucks Scout Day at the Jets Stadium in Vauxhall, Alberta. This event featured approximately 40 players from the both organization in the 2024 - 2028 classes and allowed our staff an opportunity to get an in-depth look at the players, as well as collect updated metrics via our tech partners TrackMan and Swift Performance.
Earlier this week, we broke down the top statistical performers from the event within our Statistical Analysis article. Today, we conclude our post-event coverage within this Quick Hits article, breaking down five standouts with video and scouting notes on each.

Declan Wurz 3B / RHP / Strathmore, AB / 2026Rankings StateRank: 4 / POS: 1
A right handed 2026 two-way player out of the Calgary Bucks, Wurz boasts a 6’4, 180 lbs projectable frame. On the mound he uses a loose arm out of a high ¾ arm slot to command a 77-80 mph fastball, a 75-77 mph changeup and a 69-71 mph curveball. With his steep vertical approach angle, he locates at the bottom of the zone inducing ground balls and weak contact. At the plate he reached a max exit velocity of 84.7 mph with a smooth swing allowing him to extend his arms and barrel the ball hard back up the middle and to the opposite field. His ability to elevate the ball will be further showcased as he adds strength going forward. He will be an intriguing follow both on the mound and at the plate heading into next season.

Devon Pennington C / 3B / Bishop Carroll, AB / 2025A Calgary Bucks product, Pennington showed will behind the dish with a 69 mph catcher velocity and a 2.03 pop time. In the batters box he showed good power posting a max EV of 87.8 mph as well as barrel control, driving balls to the opposite field. He also possesses quick hands through the zone and a short swing. On the mound, the fastball sat 75-78 mph, and mixed in a curveball and changeup for strikes. Pennington will be one to watch as he develops throughout the offseason.

Stevyn Andrachick SS / Vauxhall, AB / 2024Rankings StateRank: 6 / POS: 3
The Sacramento State commit showed us why he has one of the top hit tools in Canada’s 2024 class. During BP, 9 of his 16 batted balls had over a 95 mph exit velocity, and 15 of the 16 were 91 mph+. Reached a max exit velocity of 101.6 mph and consistently drove balls back up the middle in one of the best rounds of BP we’ve seen this year. During game play, he continued to swing a hot bat going 4 for 4 with a HR deep over the LF wall and a double down the LF line. Andrachick was one of the best hitters on a very talented Vauxhall Academy team this past year and continued to do just that at the Scout Day.

Sheamus Ryan LHP / Vauxhall , AB / 2024Rankings StateRank: 24 / POS: 3
The uncommitted 2024 RHP had one of the better innings during game play at the Scout Day. He won’t overpower you but nothing is straight when it comes to his repertoire. His fastball, which tops out at 83.6 mph, has 16 inches of horizontal break which generates lots of weak contact. His curveball averages 22.8 inches of horizontal break and has 8 inches of vertical depth. He also has the ability to spin the curveball at 2300+ rpm. The curveball profiles well as a future swing & miss offering. The changeup, at 73-75 mph, has late depth with an average vertical break of just 2.1 inches which allows it to play well off the fastball. Also has the ability to throw all 3 offerings for strikes and will be an interesting follow heading into the offseason.

Jimmy Boulanger RHP / Vauxhall high school, AB / 2024Boulanger is another uncommitted 2024 who showed well during game play. He possesses a 3-pitch mix which he can locate for strikes. The fastball sits 85-87 mph which profiles well at the top of the zone with a flat vertical approach angle (-4.9), inducing swing & miss and weak fly ball contact. The slider has late, sharp horizontal bite at 77-79 mph, and the changeup plays well off the fastball at 75-78 mph as it is out of a similar arm slot and fades as it nears the plate with a 19.4 inch HB and 6.7 inch IVB profile. Boulanger is one the better uncommitted 2024 arms in Alberta.
