April 1, 2024
On Friday, March 29th the Prep Baseball Alberta staff hosted the AHP Renegades Scout Day at AHP Academy in St. Albert, Alberta. It gave players the opportunity to collect updated metrics via our tech partner TrackMan.
We broke down the top measurable data performers from the event with our Stat Leaders article. Now, we move onto this Quick Hits article as we provide scouting notes and video on five standouts from the event.

Owen Pote RHP / Archbishop Jordan high school, AB / 2024Rankings StateRank: 11 / POS: 3
Pote has been a name to follow on the West Coast for a couple of years now, and he continues to get better. The Barton CC commit stands at 6-foot-6, 195-pounds with plenty of projection and room to add strength. Both the pitchability and stuff is there for the RHP, showing the ability to locate all 3 pitches for strikes. The fastball sat 90-92 mph with a spin rate over 2300 rpm. His most effective pitch, however, is the slider. With a spin rate of over 2700 rpm, the breaking has two-plane break making it an effective swing & miss pitch both in and out of the zone. As one of the top 2024s in the province, Pote will be looking to make some noise this season, starting with Best of the West in early May.

Dominik Morgan C / OF / AHP, AB / 2024Rankings StateRank: 24 / POS: 2
One of the more physical and toolsy players in Alberta is reclassed 2025 Dominik Morgan. At 6-foot-0, 205-pounds, the current strength is evident in his frame. Behind the dish, Morgan had an 83 mph catcher velocity as well as a 1.85 POP time. The dish is where he really stands out. Working in the air to his pull-side gap, Morgan maintained controlled aggression working up to a max exit velocity of 106 mph, and had 6 balls hit over 100 mph. As one of the top catchers in Alberta, Morgan has the makeup to be one of the best at his position on both sides of the ball.

Jax Mitzel C / OF / Archbishop Jordan, AB / 2025Rankings StateRank: 34 / POS: 8
Towards the end of last year, Mitzel was better known for his defensive ability. He receives and blocks well, and controls the running game. After an offseason of growth and development, the bat has improved substantially. At the Renegades Scout day, Mitzel showed improved bat-to-ball as well as the ability to elevate with authority, working up the middle and to his backside gap, reaching a max exit velocity and 98 mph. The uncommitted 2025 showed us that defensive ability as well, with a catcher velocity of 75 and POP time of 1.95. We’ll keep a close eye on Mitzel this season to see if that improved bat translates to in-game success at the dish.

Lucas Verhoeven RHP / 2B / Bev Facey, AB / 2024Another pitcher within the AHP program that has had a productive offseason is reclassed 2025 Lucas Verhoeven. It starts with a big velocity jump, the 6-foot-0, 180-pound RHP is now up to 87 mph with the fastball. Out of a high ¾ slot, Verhoeven has plenty of carry up in the zone with the fastball that pairs well with a fading changeup and a downer curveball. With a spin rate north of 2400 rpm, he has over -8 inches of induced vertical break on that curveball. This repertoire allows him to work in different areas of the zone while generating lots of swing & miss in the process. Verhoeven will be an uncommitted arm to follow this season.

Ryan Kwasnycia RHP / AHP Academy, AB / 2024Rankings StateRank: 50 / POS: 18
The Pratt CC commit opened some eyes at the AHP Renegades Scout Day. Kwasnycia has a long and loose arm out of a low ¾ slot that allows him to add plenty of arm side run to his fastball, sinker, and changeup. Both the fastball and sinker sat in the 84-85 mph range which paired well with a slider that profiles much like a sweeper, with over 12 inches of horizontal break. He showed the ability to spin the breaking ball north of 2450 rpm, and the fastball upwards of 2350 rpm. With big growth over the offseason, Kwasnycia will be looking to make an immediate impact for the Renegades pitching staff when the season begins.
