Top Prospect Games Scout Blog: Pitcher Only's

Eleven pitchers were on hand to pitch only in game play at the Top Prospect Games at Choccolocco Park on June 30. Six of these pitchers lit the radar gun up at 84 mph or higher, with 2021 LHP Cole Cheatham touching 92 mph during his inning of work. There was some high pitchability in this group and it proved to be difficult for hitters to have success against them. Below are individual scout notes on all eleven arms.
Tyler Sirmon: LHP/OF, (2022) Baker, AL. 5-foot-10, 150-pound. Advanced on the mound, has a ¾ arm angle with a compact arm action. Feel type pitcher and uses easy effort. Changeup (64-65 mph).Produced a fastball that came in at 70-72 mph and topped out at 73 mph; had arm side command and running action. He showed glove side control and plus action on his sharp curveball (64-66). Big time ASR on the fastball and nice depth on the breaking ball. Pounded the zone with the fastball.
Jase Gray: RHP/3B, (2022) Gadsden City, AL. 5-foot-10, 180-pound mature frame. Above average on the mound, threw from a high ¾ arm angle and had above average arm speed. Up-tempo type pitcher and uses some effort. an athletic finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 84-86 mph and topped out at 87 mph; had late action and arm side command with heavy movement. Showed a sharp curveball (68-69) with late action. Late ASR on the fastball and the breaking ball is a 2 plane pitch showing late depth. Nice looking '22 RHP.
Matthew Thompson: RHP/SS, (2022) Spanish Fort, AL. 5-foot-11, 175-pound. Fluid on the mound, showed above average arm speed and a loose arm action. Athletic balance point. Threw his fastball 80-81 mph and topped out at 82 mph; shows sinking action and arm side command. Has a 11/5 curveball (67-68) that shows in the zone command. Had fading action and very consistent control on his changeup (76-77). Does a nice job sinking the fastball and fills the zone up with all three pitches.
Brodey Lentz: LHP/OF, (2022) Lauderdale County, AL. 6-foot, 160-pound lanky frame. On the mound, has a high ¾ arm angle and consistent arm speed. Feel type pitcher who shows easy effort. Showed consistent balance point. Threw his fastball 80-81 mph with a max of 81 mph; shows low in the zone control and running action. Threw a 11/5 curveball (67-68) with swing and miss action and consistent command. Slider action on the breaking ball and he commanded the fastball down in the zone.
Reid Gongwer: LHP/OF, (2022) Chelsea, AL. 6-foot, 185-pound. Above average on the mound, shows quick arm speed. Used easy effort in his delivery. Showed athletic balance point. Threw his fastball 81-82 mph and topped out at 82 mph; had a heavy fastball that showed running action and consistent control. His curveball (69-70) has control around the zone and swing and miss action. His changeup (72-73) has fading action. Late fade on the fastball and the breaking ball shows serious tilt and tight spin.
Steven Cash: LHP/OF, (2022) Bibb County, AL. 6-foot-1, 160-pound lanky frame. Above average on the mound, has a high ¾ arm angle and quick arm speed. Feel type pitcher and uses easy effort. Showed athletic balance point. Sat with his fastball at 81-82 mph and topped out at 82 mph; has sinking action and around the zone command. His 12/6 curveball (65-69) has very consistent command and late action. His changeup (70-71) has very consistent command and fading action. Smooth action and a clean arm path who can locate all pitches to both sides of the dish. High projectability in this LHP.
Ben Capps: RHP/3B, (2022) Gordo, AL. 6-foot-1, 195-pound mature frame. Above average on the mound, showed a high ¾ arm angle with quick arm speed. drop-and-drive type pitcher. Shows a clean finish. Cutter (76-77 mph).Produced a fastball that came in at 83-84 mph with a max of 84 mph; shows low in the zone control and late action with heavy movement. Threw a 12/6 curveball (67-68) that showed plus action and consistent command. His changeup (73-74) had very consistent control and fading action. Showed downhill tilt on the fastball from a short, compact delivery. Pound the zone with all pitches and repeated his delivery each pitch.
Cole Cheatham: LHP/OF, (2021) Ardmore, AL. 6-foot-2, 187-pound. Advanced on the mound, showed quick arm speed with a very quick arm action and an over-the-top arm angle. Up-tempo type pitcher and shows easy effort. Threw his fastball 88-91 mph and topped out at 92 mph; shows very consistent command and running action. His sharp curveball (78-80) had tight action and very consistent control. Showed very tight spin on the breaking ball that was filthy to compliment a high level fastball. Committed to Mississippi State the day after the event.
Jacob Ingram: RHP/OF, (2021) Tallassee, AL. 6-foot-2, 185-pound solid frame. On the mound, had quick arm speed. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who shows some effort. He has in line shoulders with athletic balance point. Threw his fastball 82-84 mph with a max of 85 mph; shows running action with heavy movement. Has a 12/6 curveball (68-70) that shows command low in the zone and tight action. Had sinking action and arm side control on his changeup (76-77). Showed nice life on the fastball and kept the ball down in the zone. Pitched to both sides of the plate and seemed to always be ahead in the count. Really good '21 RHP.
Austin Morris: RHP/OF, (2022) Mortimer Jordan, AL. 6-foot-4, 182-pound lanky frame. Projectable on the mound, has a ¾ arm angle with quick arm speed. drop-and-drive type pitcher. Showed strong balance point. Threw his fastball 84-86 mph and topped out at 87 mph; had late action and glove side command. Showed a sharp curveball (72-73) with late action. His changeup (66-69) had very consistent command and sinking action. Does a nice job of mixing up his arm slot and has a ton of potential as he continues to develop consistent secondary stuff.
Thrasher Steed: RHP/1B, (2022) Gulf Shores, AL. 6-foot-4, 198-pound physical frame. Above average on the mound, showed quick arm speed with a loose arm action. Up-tempo type pitcher and uses high effort. Shows downhill shoulders. Slider (79-80 mph).Produced a fastball that came in at 85-86 mph with a max of 87 mph; shows around the zone command and late action with heavy movement. Shows a 11/5 curveball with tight action. Had control low in the zone and swing and miss action on his changeup (79-80). The fastball seemed to take off late and the change up showed big time deception out of the hand.
