Trash Pandas Classic Scout Blog: Outfielders

As we continue to roll out position by position scout analysis from the Trash Pandas Classic, today we take a look at the group of outfielders at the event. There were a total of nine outfielders at the event and four of those players also jumped on the mound to show their stuff as a pitcher. Let's take an in depth look at each of the outfielders. Next we will wrap up our coverage of the event by taking a look at the infielders from the event. 

 

Luke Samples: OF/3B, (2023) Huntsville, AL. 5-foot-10, 165-pound athletic frame. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.42. Started in an athletic open stance with a controlled load, then used a short stride to initiate his swing. Had efficient bat speed, flat swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found some barrels through his round. Base hit approach. the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 80 mph. His best position velocity in the outfield was registered at 77 mph. Fluid In the infield, has smooth footwork and a clean exchange. Used an-over-the-top slot with a loose arm action. Solid skills in the outfield and handles pitches in and out with the bat. 

Brody King: RHP/OF, (2024) Huntsville, AL. 6-foot, 140-pound lanky frame. Clocked a 60 time of 7.2 at the event. Started in a tall stance with a controlled load, then used a short stride to start his swing. Has quick bat speed, upward swing plane and good extension on his finish. Created some loud contact during his round. Up the middle approach. the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 77 mph. Above average in the outfield, his best throw of the day was clocked at 78 mph; has smooth footwork and a clean exchange. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a loose arm action and an-over-the-top slot. Projectable on the mound, showed a long arm action and above average arm speed. Feel type pitcher and shows easy effort. Threw his fastball 79-80 mph and topped out at 82 mph; showed very consistent control and sinking action. Showed swing and miss action and in the zone command on his curveball (69-71). His changeup (72-74) shows fading action. Will be interesting to follow this '24 grad in the years to come. 

Chandler James: OF/RHP, (2021) Sparkman, AL. 5-foot-10, 186-pound mature frame. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.67. Sets up in a tall stance and has a leg kick. Bat speed is quick, has upward simple swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found multiple barrels in his rounds. Pull side approach. the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 88 mph. In the outfield, his throws to the bases were maxed out at 84 mph. In the infield, has consistent footwork and a natural exchange. Used a quick arm action with a high ¾ slot while showing some accuracy to the base. Confident on the mound, where he showed consistent arm speed, also used a loose arm action with a high ¾ arm angle. Produced a fastball that came in at 76-77 mph and topped out at 78 mph; shows glove side command and sinking action. His 11/5 curveball (62-64) had swing and miss action and around the zone command. The arm really works from the outfield.

CJ Bush: OF/RHP, (2023) Bob Jones, AL. 6-foot, 167-pound. At the plate, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 83 mph. Begins in an open stance with a controlled load, then uses a short stride just before his swing. Short simple swing plane. Found some barrels during his round. Raw from the outfield, he displayed a position velocity of 79 mph; had consistent footwork and a twitchy exchange. Had a high ¾ slot and a long arm action. Established speed as one of his strengths with an efficient 60 time of 6.84. Projectable on the mound, showed a loose arm action with consistent arm speed. Feel type pitcher and uses easy effort. Produced a fastball that came in at 73-76 mph and topped out at 78 mph; shows cutting action and glove side control. His curveball (65-66) shows command around the zone and swing and miss action. 

Ian Burroughs: OF, (2023) West Limestone, AL. 6-foot, 155-pound solid frame. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.28. Started in an athletic quiet stance with a compact load, then used a toe tap. Had short swing plane and had good extension on his finish. Found some barrels during his round. Pull side approach. the switch hitter had a max exit velocity of 84 mph. Fluid from the outfield, he displayed a position velocity of 77 mph; had rhythmic footwork and a quick exchange. Very consistent player with a wide range of solid skills. 

Cole OBrien: RHP/OF, (2022) Decatur Heritage Christian, AL. 6-foot-2, 170-pound athletic frame. During batting practice, Obrien clocked an exit velocity of 81 mph. Starts in an open stance with a small load, then uses a toe tap just before his swing. Had efficient bat speed and had good extension on his finish. Found some barrels through his round. Opposite field approach. Above average from the outfield, he displayed a position velocity of 84 mph; had athletic footwork, a quick exchange and sure hands. From an-over-the-top slot, showed consistent accuracy to the base with a loose arm action. Recorded a time of 7.74 in the 60-yard dash. On the mound, used a loose arm action and a high ¾ arm angle while showing above average arm speed. Shows easy effort in his delivery. Produced a fastball that came in at 81-82 mph and topped out at 82 mph; has a heavy fastball that shows around the zone control and running action. Threw a 11/5 curveball (67-68) with swing and miss action and very consistent command. Really impressed as a two way guy at the event. 

Paul Thompson: OF/OF, (2022) Hoover, AL. 6-foot-1, 185-pound solid frame. Showed off his speed at the event, running a swift 6.97 60-yard dash. Starts in an athletic quiet stance with a controlled load, then uses a short stride to start his swing. Bat speed is efficient and uses flat swing plane. He found some barrels in his rounds. Line drive approach. Thompson's best exit velocity was 87 mph. Above average from the outfield, he made throws to the infield at velocities up to 82 mph; shows fluid footwork and a clean exchange. Showed consistent accuracy to the base with an-over-the-top slot and a long arm action. 

Chandler Buss: OF/3B, (2020) Grissom, AL. 6-foot-2, 175-pound athletic frame. In the box, Buss clocked an exit velocity of 88 mph. Started in a tall stance with a small load, then used a quick stride before his swing. Had short rotational swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found multiple barrels in his round. Gap to gap approach. Above average from the outfield, he showed the ability to throw at velocities up to 81 mph; showed a natural exchange and consistent footwork. Some accuracy to the bases, used a high ¾ slot with a short arm action. Showed off his speed at the event, running a swift 6.92 60-yard dash. Showed the ability to handle the barrel very well in BP.

Garrett Day: OF/3B, (2022) Randolph, AL. 6-foot-4, 190-pound athletic frame. Performed well in the 60-yard dash, clocking a speedy time of 6.64. Setup consisted of crouched balanced stance and a tight load. Had upward swing plane, raw bat speed and good extension on his finish. Found multiple barrels during his rounds. Gap to gap approach. the right-handed hitter displayed an exit velocity of 93 mph, showing his strength and power ability. Projectable in the outfield, his best throws to the infield topped out at 82 mph; shows smooth footwork and a clean exchange. Showed a quick arm action with a high ¾ slot. Very intriguing, athletic '22 grad that has a solid skill set.
