Day 2 of the Underclass Area Code saw each team take batting practice in the morning before four games commenced. The action picked up considerably in the third game of the day as heralded Stanford-recruit, 2020 RHP/SS Masyn Winn (Kingwood HS, TX) toed the rubber for the Rangers scout team. Standing just 5-foot-9, 165-pounds, Winn brought his intensity and electric arm strength to the bump, and struck out eight batters in an efficient five innings of work. The right-hander ran his fastball up to 95 mph on multiple occasions, and sat 90-93 early on in the outing. The fastball played up even harder with his command of a multi-tier breaking, tight-spinning, 11/5 breaking ball (73-75) that buckled multiple hitters as well as an advanced changeup, thrown with fastball hand speed at 79-82. Winn’s competitiveness stands out on the mound, and he fed off the adrenaline brought on from facing a stacked Midwest White Sox lineup. Though he has a slight pause in the arm stroke, his athleticism allows him to repeat his slot with ease, and pound the bottom of the zone. Overall, the outing, and game as a whole, was a big boost to the day, and brought even more energy to a great event.

Game of the Day:

RANGERS-WHITE SOX

Luke Boyers, OF, Samuel V. Champion HS, TX
TCU recruit. Boyers was on base all four times, and finished with a single, a triple, and two walks. The switch-hitting outfielder sets up in a deep crouch and looks to drive the ball from gap to gap while playing with plenty of energy.

Jordan Lawlar, SS, Dallas Jesuit HS, TX (2021)
Uncommitted. Lawlar is quickly standing out as one of the top prospects in the 2021 class given his elite athleticism, advanced defensive work, and quick hands at the plate. The young infielder has an athletic, 6-foot-1, 160-pound frame, and an impressive first step on the infield. He singled in his first at-bat and also had a walk. There is plenty to like about Lawlar currently, and even more about the upside of what he may become.

Christian Knapczyk, SS, Joliet Catholic HS, IL
Louisville recruit. Knapczyk led off the game with a perfect bunt on the first pitch against Wynn, which went for a single. He got down the line at 3.76 from the left side, and his speed and athleticism are clearly a weapon. He also singled later on in the game, and continues to impress each time that I watch him play.

Batting Practice Standouts:

Chase Davis, OF, Franklin HS, CA
Uncommitted. Davis is physically-gifted at 6-foot-1, 200-pounds with defined strength throughout, and showcased easy lag in the zone while driving the ball from gap to gap with minimal effort. Utilizing a leg hang, his hands load down and back before working flat through the zone. There looks to be even more power that will emerge in the near future which makes Davis one of the better prospects in the class.
