SAN DIEGO, CA - With rain glooming over San Diego County early in the week, the San Diego-Section was forced to push games to the later part of the week. Fortunately, the rain came to a halt and I was able to get to a couple of games this week on Wednesday and Friday. Talent was on full display in both games, and below are some details and recaps of both games including player standouts and highlights.
The Patriots from Christian High School traveled west for a game under the lights at Francis Parker High School. The Christian High Patriots (6-1) flaunt a lineup with two Division-1 commits including the brand new San Diego State recruit '24 Xavier Farnum, and the stud two-way player '23 Vaughn Major (UCSB).
‘24 @AztecBaseball commit C and #FutureGames22 participant @FarnumXavier is off to a solid start this spring for @CHS___Athletics.

Hitting a strong .450 (9/20) through 7 games. Real physical lower half. Simple approach within a balanced swing. Strong catching skillset as well. pic.twitter.com/Iprth3QXqM
'23 Shane Bailey and '23 Hunter Kaul are also great pieces for the Patriots, who are committed to Western Oregon and Biola, respectively. The Lancers of Francis Parker (5-4) also showed Division-1 commit '25 Ben “Trey” Gudoy, who is committed to UCLA. Gudoy stood out on Wednesday night, logging 2 loud base-hits including a double.
'24 Ashton Mccurty got the start for the Patriots going 5.0 innings, only giving up 3 hits and striking out 5 batters. The Patriots took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, thanks to a Hunter Kaul sac-fly, and never looked back.
Intriguing @PBR_Uncommitted ‘24 out of @CHS___Athletics in @AshtonMcCurty. 2-sport/2-way prospect. Physical/athletic presence.

At the plate, he stays short to the ball with quick hands. On the mound yesterday, he threw 5 shutout innings showing a T88 FB and a mid 70s breaker. pic.twitter.com/uVCjdQvliC
Shane Bailey hit a two-run homer in the top of the second inning after a 2-out walk, and a Xavier Farnum RBI single made it 4-0 Patriots after two. Christian would tally two-runs in the 4th, one-run in the 5th, 6th, and 7th for a total of 9 runs.
Solid day at the plate yesterday for ‘23 @WOU_Baseball commit and #WCG22 standout @ShaneBailey2023 in @CHS___Athletics 9-2 win.

Had 2H including this #PBRBombSquad. Flatter bat path that stays through the zone well w/ good extension allowing him to make loud contact out front. pic.twitter.com/oxDF8MKhDz
For the Lancers, their runs would come in the Bottom of the 6th off of a Sacrifice Fly by Sam Smith, and an RBI- Single from Julian Custer. The Patriots will look to improve on their promising season against Del Norte on Tuesday 3/28 while the Lancers will look to bounce back against Maranatha Christian on Monday 3/27.
The Steele Canyon Cougars (6-5) traveled down South for an inter-conference battle with the Eastlake Titans (8-1). The Titans don a lineup with '23 Isaiah Lane (Oklahoma commit), and '23 Nico Libed (USD commit).
The Cougars also have their own 4-year college prospect in catcher '23 Tommy Molina, who is committed to Point Loma Nazarene, and the quickly-emerging LHP '23 Branden Jackel, who recently pitched a complete-game against the vaunted St. Augustine lineup.
The Cougars would only have four hits on the day, two of them coming from their senior catcher Molina. Eastlake’s '24 Noah Betanco had three hits on the day, including an RBI-single in the Bottom of the 1st inning totaling a 2-run inning for the Titans.
Here’s a look at 2H yesterday from ‘23 @PLNUBaseball commit C @TommyMolina18 of @Steele_Baseball.

Coming off a HUGE junior season. One of the better power bats in SD. Smooth swing with a consistent approach/intent to do damage. Important bat for the Cougars this spring. pic.twitter.com/C1FkBpQBXM
Then, in the bottom of the second, Isaiah Lane hit an RBI Double to CF to extend Eastlake’s lead to 3-0. '24 Jeremiah Vargas would log an RBI-Double in the Bottom of the 3rd, and he would later score on an error to make this a 5-0 game for the Titans.
Here’s a π at @OU_Baseball commit @IsaiahLane2023 of @eastlake_bb.

One of the smoothest SSs in CA. Soft hands w/ ability to move through the ball extremely well.
Looks a bit more physical at the plate than last spring. Quick hands work direct and deliver an on-plane barrel. pic.twitter.com/zYhuQH6olE
The scoring would end in the Bottom of the 4th after a Lane walk, and a Nico Libed RBI-Double down the left-field line.
On the mound for the Titans, '24 Jake Davis went 5 innings only allowing 3-hits while showing impeccable command giving up 0-walks. Also tallied 4 strikeouts on the day.
The Titans take on the Olympian High School Eagles on Monday 3/27, while the Cougars look to bounce back against Santana High School on Tuesday 3/28.
