SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Prep Baseball Report California ended the year on a high note with the San Diego Fall Open. With the sun setting an hour earlier and on a weekend that featured the Breeders’ Cup World Championships a mile away at the Del Mar racetrack, the San Diego Fall Open had its fair share of standouts, longshots and new names to help set the table for 2022. The event featured 400 batting practice pitches, 136 live at-bats, 306 defensive in game slots, 96 pages of TrackMan and Blast data and 7 hours of the best game on Earth.

With so many talented players on hand it was a great day of showcase baseball. The Quick Hits edition hit leadoff for post-event content followed by our stats story and TrackMan pitching analysis. Profile videos have officially been uploaded, helping clear the way for the four part scouting report rollout. TrackMan and Blast Motion provide necessary data needed to analyze and understand player capabilities but the written eye test remains undefeated and an integral part in scouting. Today we take a look at catchers.

Max Farrell, San Marcos  (CA), 2025
Positional Profile: C/SS
Body: 5-8, 150-pounds. Present strength, plenty of room for strength development, baseball actions and feel.
Hit: RHH. Even and athletic hitting set up, direct barrel path, two hand finish. Blast Motion Scores of 52-42-64. Scored very well for a 2025, above-average rotation score makes his bat one with considerable potential. Faired very well against pitchers two to three years older. Name to watch.
Power: 81.00 max exit velocity. Current hand and bat speed show power potential. 294 ft line drive to the left-field gap in batting practice.
Arm: RH. C - 70.00 mph. INF - 79.00 mph.  Arm showed strength especially with momentum in the infield at 79 mph. The arm swing is short and quick enough that it will play at the next level.
Defense: 2.00-2.30 pop times. Handled himself very well with pitchers 2-4 years older than him. Slow to block at times but the pitch framing and low target were impressive. The confidence and ability to call a game at his age was another promising sign.
Run: 7.82 runner in the 60.

Parker Romano, Laguna Beach  (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: C/OF
Body: 5-8, 160-pounds. Medium athletic build. Room to add physical gains.
Hit: RHH. Wide base with a relaxed bat rested on his shoulder. Small and quick leg lift trigger as the barrel and back elbow work up in his load. Bat works on an uphill path through the zone. Tad long at times with some early extension which caused some topspun pull-side LDs.
Power: 85.00 max exit velocity. Pull-side doubles power. Needed increases in bat speed and rotational acceleration to increase power.
Arm: RH. C - 70.00 mph.  Average arm strength. 3/5 accurate throwdowns. Shorter arm action. Pulls front side early at times which hinders throwing accuracy.
Defense: 2.18-2.30 pop times. Sets up in a low athletic crouch. Decent feet on throwdowns showing quickness while gaining good ground toward 2nd. Average exchange quickness. Present pitch-framing ability. A firm glove that worked low to high. Worked in some knee-down crouches to help manipulate framing.
Run: 7.46 runner in the 60.

Brett Williams, San Marcos (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: C/3B
Body: 5-11, 180-pounds. Proportional build that is filling out. Some present strength in the lower/upper half.
Hit: RHH. Quiet and relaxed setup. Upright upper-half, narrow set feet with lower set hands in stance. Simple forward stride with hands working back into a tight early connection position. Compact stroke that stays connected. Level through the zone with a high barrel finish. Adjusts body tilt well to pitch location and stays through body tilt. Good extension post-contact. Gap to gap approach throughout the BP round. Had himself a double to the LC gap in-game action.
Power: 96.00 max exit velocity. Wall-ball power. Blast metrics paint a decent power profile with a bat speed average of 74.1 mph and rotational acceleration average of 19gs being well above average for his level.
Arm: RH. C - 77.00 mph. Short arm action. Above-average arm strength. Flashed some decent carry on throwdowns. 3/5 on throws to second.
Defense: 2.10-2.25 pop times. Showed quick feet and exchanges on throwdowns. Decent framing and blocking skills. Mixed up crouches to optimize framing.
Run: 7.30 runner in the 60.
