Denver - In a match up of two of the best teams in the Centennial League the Cougars got the best of the Mustangs 11-1. For the Cougars it continues to be about the solid pitching production they are receiving from 2017 LHP Conner Nantkes. Nantkes dominated Mullen from the first inning, giving up only 2 hits, a single up the middle to Joey Salvato in the first inning and then a bunt single to Marcus Salvato in the 5th inning.
CT opened the game with three runs in the top of the 1st, all three runs were unearned as Mullen committed three errors in the top of the 1st inning, The Cougars continued their offensive onslaught and followed up with three more runs in the second with three doubles and two singles. The Cougars added 5 runs in the 6th with 4 hits. Nantkes had a single and a double and a walk, 2017 3B Nick Perez had three RBI's, 2016 1B Ryan Sullivan (Iowa Western C.C.) had two singles and a double, 2017 INF Michael Morris had two singles, and 2016 OF Jerome Bohannan (Metropolitan State) had a double and a bunt single.
Andrew Nuanes for Mullen started and did not pitch all that badly, without the four errors, it would have been a much closer game. It just appeared to be one of these days when Mullen could not do much right and struggled from the beginning of the game.
Cherokee Trail is now 10 and 4 on the season. Up next for the Cougars is an away game against Smoky Hill on Thursday. Mullen is now 12 and 4 on the season and will travel to Grandview on Thursday.
