Sunbelt Tryout Pitcher Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Junior Sunbelt Tryout took place on April 24th at ThunderRidge High School. 54 prospects showed up and strutted their stuff in a pro-style workout. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position analysis of the event. We continue our look at this event with the Outfield position.

Tommy Drury, Legend High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 170-pound right hand pitcher stands tall and starts square to the plate.  Uses a high leg kick and slight sink on his back leg to drive to the plate.  Delivery is in-line with the plate and he gets good extension out front.  He delivers from an over the top arm slot, his fastball was 84 MPH with good command.  He added a 68-70 MPH curve with 11/5 break and a 73-74 MPH change with late movement down in the zone. 

Matt Erickson, Fairview High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 170-pound left hand pitcher who starts square.  He uses a short rocker step and a compact leg kick with a slight sink to deliver to the plate.  He shows good reach to the plate and falls off slightly to the left side on his follow through.  He delivers from a high ¾ arm slot and maintained good arm speed on all three pitches.  His fastball was 84 MPH with good command away, he also showcased a 67-68 MPH curve with sharp break in on the hitters hands and a 72-74 MPH change.

Zachary Lamari, Strasburg High School, 2017
A 6-foot-2, 176-pound right hand pitcher who starts square to the plate.  He uses a short leg kick and falls to the plate on his delivery.  Arm slot is ¾ to high ¾ and his follow through takes him to the right side.  Fastball was 72 MPH with good command away.  He added a 63-64 MPH curve with sweeping 11/5 break and a 65-66 MPH change. 

Carl Martillaro, Pomona High School, 2017
A 6-foot-0, 180-pound right hand pitcher who starts square to the plate.  He uses a long rocker step and high leg kick on his delivery.  He lands in-line with the plate and delivers from a ¾ arm slot. Follow through is upright with a slight fall off to the right side.  Fastball was 75 MPH with slight movement away; he also showcased a 64-65 MPH curve with sweeping break and a 66-68 MPH change down and in. 

Davis Powell, Regis Jesuit High School, 2017
A 6-foot-1, 150-pound left hand pitcher who starts square to the plate.  He uses a quick  step and high leg kick on his delivery.  He shows good extension to the plate and releases from a high ¾ arm angle.  His follow through takes him to the left side.  Fastball was 77 MPH with late movement and good command away to the right hand hitter.  He added a 63-65 MPH curve with good back door action and a 70-71 MPH change that lived down in the zone. 

Jalen Saiz, Mountain Vista High School, 2017
A 5-foot-9, 205-pound right hand pitcher starts slightly angles towards third base.  He gets to a good balance point and drives hard to the plate.  He lands on a stiff front side and his follow through takes him to the right side.  He delivers from a high ¾ arm slot and featured an 84 MPH fastball with good command in, he also showcased a 69-70 MPH curve with sharp 11/5 break and a 76-78 MPH change with good downward action. 

Padric Walsh, Smoky Hill High School, 2017
A 6-foot-6, 170-pound right hand pitcher who uses his height well on the mound.  He has a short step and good balance on his delivery.  He shows good extension out front, which get the ball on you in a hurry.  He lands in-line with the plate and stays square through the pitch.  He featured an 81 MPH fastball with good command away and a 66-67 MPH curve with 11/5 break, he finished with a 70-72 MPH change down in the zone.
