Prep Baseball Report

Top 2019 Catcher Pop-Times

By Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

PBR Colorado strives to be the most comprehensive source of player information across the state. The Prep Baseball Report is the No. 1 resource for high school baseball in each state we cover through our variety of events, boots-on-the-ground scouting staff, daily coverage, and multimedia platforms. Our multimedia platforms and events work in tandem, ultimately creating the most powerful source of high school baseball promotion in each state.  While other organizations take a national approach, our goal is to become the authoritative voice on the ground level of each state.

We recently did a series on the top uncommitted pop-times, 60-times, arm velos, and exit velocities. Now we are doing a series on our Top 5 overall numbers for each class.

Top Catcher Pop-Times 2019:

Billy Pospisil, Pomona
Pop-Time:1.86

5-foot-t-10, 180 pounds. Bats and throws right. At the plate has a slightly opened stance, with a toe-tap stride. Keeps hands inside ball with slight uphill swing path. Has pull tendencies because he flies a little open on front side. Produced a 87 mph exit velocity off the tee. Has a strong arm in the infield, and had good glove to hand exchange. Threw 82 mph across diamond from a high 3/4 arm slot and gains good ground. As catcher had one of the top pop-times at 1.86 to 1.93 off a coach. Has potential on the mound to be pretty good. Throws from a high 3/4 arm slot, and arm is quick and works well with body. Short on the back side, hard to pick up. Stride is in-line with the plate with good leg drive. Throws off two-feet. Showcased a 80-81 mph fastball with some arm-side run. Curveball was 68-69 and so was changeup. Both thrown at same arm speed as fastball. Ran a 7.0 laser timed 60. Versatile 2019 player to follow.

Clayton Burke, Mullen
Pop-Time: 1.90

6-foot-2, 205 pounds. Very simple and clean delivery with poise on the mound. Big presence for his age. Motion lulls you to sleep then brings a fastball at 80-82 mph touching 83 from an over the top arm slot. Arm is short on backside, hides it well, then it's on you. Lands inline to the plate then falls off to 1B. Curve had late 11/5 tilt at 68 mph.  Will be a high pitching prospect in our state. At the plate had a good weekend. Stands slightly open and tall. Loads hands back with short stride. Could gain a little more separation. Bottom hand finish. Gap to gap power. Registered a 80 mph exit velocity off a tee. At 3B has good feet for big kid. Arm velo was 72 mph across diamond from quick high 3/4 arm slot. Got behind the dish to catch and showcased a 1.9 pop-time off a coach. Ran a 8 flat laser timed 60.

Blake Labuda, Legacy
Pop-Time: 2.03

5-foot-8, 135 pounds. Bats and throws right. Slightly opened stance with slight crouch. Short stride, hand load is good with some rhythm. Swing slightly uphill. Line drive power up the middle. Solid contact in batting practice round. Registered a 77 mph exit velo off the tee. Shows nice soft hands when receiving. Pop-time was 2.03-2.06 off pitcher in between innings. Arm strength was 73 mph down to 2nd. Ran a 7.4 60.

Jett Hoggatt, Rocky Mountain
Pop-Time: 2.06

A 6-foot-1, 190-pound right hand hitting catcher/OF who ran a 7.20 60.  At the plate he hits from a slightly open stance with a high leg kick for timing.  Swing plane is level through the zone with good extension out front.  89 MPH exit velocity produced several balls off the left center wall.  In the outfield he is athletic and moves well on balls in the gap.  He throws from an over the top motion and delivers an accurate 82 MPH ball to the bag.  Behind the plate he is quiet and frames pitches well.  He shows good actions on blocking the ball and quick feet to get in throwing position.  Pop-times were 2.06-2.08 and arm velocity was 79 MPH.

Jaden Murray, Valor Christian
Pop-Time: 2.09

6-foot-2, 180-pound right hand hitting catcher/outfielder who ran a 4.5 home to first. At the plate he hits from a 60/40 stance and has a slight toe tap for timing.  Hands drop slightly on the swing and create a slight upward swing path.  He had an 84 MPH exit velocity.  Behind the plate he has good movement when blocking balls.  He moves around the plate on throw downs and had a 2.09 pop-time.  He showcased a 78 MPH arm velocity.

Braden Dedrick, Pine Creek
Pop-Time: 2.09

5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Bats and throws right. Has a slight crouch in his stance. Hands are a little low in load. Short stride. Swing is slightly uphill but extends through the ball well.
