Unsigned Senior Showcase Middle Infield Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report Colorado Unsigned Senior Showcase took place Sunday October 28th at Metropolitan State College.  Several prospects from Colorado and Wyoming were on hand to showcase their skills for the Prep Baseball Report Colorado/Wyoming staff.

Over the course of the next week we will break down individual performances. We began our look with the outfield position and now we look at the MIF position.


Unsigned Senior Showcase MIF Position

Sam Low SS / SS / Chatfield, CO / 2019

6-1, 160-pound shortstop with a strong arm and quick twitch action. Balanced and wide at the plate with a quick load and stride on the pitch.  Hands create good whip through the zone and swing is slightly uphill. Showed good bat control to all fields during the live round. Exit velocity was 90 mph. Defensively he shows good range and smooth actions. Quick glove to hand transfer and delivers from a short high ¾ slot. Arm is accurate and played at 84 mph.

 

 

 

 

 

Jesus Martinez SS / 2B / Hinkley, CO / 2019

5-11, 177-pound right hand hitting MIF. Simple approach at the plate, short stride and load on the pitch. Swing is flat through the zone and contact hitter to all fields. Strong lower half helps him show pull power during the live round. Exit velocity was 82 mph. Fundamentally sound in the field, squares up on the ball and has smooth fielding actions. Arm is accurate and over the top. Arm velocity was 70 mph.

 

 

 

 

 

Luis Olivas SS / 2B / Brighton high school, CO / 2019

5-10, 145-pound athletic short stop and right hand pitcher. Multi-positional gamer on the field. Uses a slow load and big leg trigger to get the swing going. Strong lower leg drive and good whip through the zone on the swing. Swing path is uphill with good gap power. Exit velocity was 86 mph. Defensively he shows good anticipation and smooth actions through the ball. Arm is short and accurate and played at 74 mph. Mechanically sound on the mound, can eat up innings as a reliver or a starter. From balance he drops and drives to the plate, arm is over the top and he finishes long out front. Fastball was 76 mph with late run in the zone. Arm speed stays up on his off speed pitches, curve sat 61-63 with 11/5 break and his change was 60-62 with late down movement.

 

 

 

 

 

Travis Vaala 2B / SS / Legend, CO / 2019

6-1, 145-pound left hand hitting MIF. Classic middle infielder who is interchangeable at both short and second. At the plate he is balanced with a short compact path to the ball. Swing produces line drives to all fields. Swing path is slightly uphill with good extension out front. Exit velocity was 80 mph. Defensively he is smooth and sound while fielding through the ball. Quick glove to hand transfer and showed good feet around the bag. Arm is accurate and played at 75 mph across the diamond.
