West Coast Games Recap: Pitchers

Josh Reynolds
Colorado State Director

The PBR West Coast Games took place on August 12-14 in Las Vegas at UNLV and College of Southern Nevada. There was a lot of uncommitted talent in the 2023 class from seven states and Canada. We started with a pro-style workout and finished with three games against Arizona (8-6 L), Utah (16-5 W), and Pacific Northwest (3-2 W). Team Colorado was well represented and showcased their abilities all weekend.

Trevor Landen RHP / SS / Heritage, CO / 2023

6 foot 3, 180-pound RHP/MIF. Thin frame with room to fill out. Sat 84-87 topping at 88. He mixes a curveball at 72-75 with 2600 plus spin (2786 max). This pitch showed swing and miss characteristics and can be an absolute out pitch with further consistency. He also has a change-up he mixed in vs. left-handed hitters at 78-81. He is an infielder also, which has limited his in-game reps on the mound. The more experience he gets, the more consistent and confident he will become.

Laif Palmer RHP / OF / Golden, CO / 2023

6 foot 6, 200-pound RHP. He opened some eyes with his projection. You can dream on his frame and stuff. He has room to fill out and repeats for his size. Long levers that he can control and be on time. In his four innings, the fastball sat 87-90 with a little natural cut, and the slider was 80-3, with some depth. He created uncomfortable at-bats for hitters. If he puts the work in, his ceiling is high.

Carson Sherrill RHP / OF / Chatfield, CO / 2023

5 foot 11, 185-pound RHP with a strong and sturdy frame. Attacked the zone with a fastball at 86-88, topping at 89. He uses two off-speed pitches, a slider at 76-77 with some depth and a change-up at 76-79 with good arm speed. Fast-paced and compact delivery comes right after the hitter. With his mentality and work ethic, he should continue to progress.

Gabriel Jacobs RHP / OF / Ponderosa , CO / 2023

6 foot, 170-pound RHP with a short arm stroke and athletic delivery. He made quick work in his four innings with a fastball that sat 84-87 and good command of the zone. His change-up was 80-2, with the difference maker being his curveball. The 73-76 pitch was on point. He threw it in any count, and it mirrored his fastball out of hand. He understands who he is and executed his plan.

Darian Burnett RHP / 1B / Erie, CO / 2023

6 foot 3, 205-pound RHP. A large frame with broad shoulders that can still add strength. Sat 82-85 from a three-quarter arm slot. He attacked the zone in his three innings on the mound. He mixes in two off-speed pitches, a slider at 68-70 and a change-up with some arm side run at 76. All three pitches come from the same window. Competitor and has a feel for the game.

Ty Thompson RHP / 1B / Riverdale Ridge, CO / 2023

6 foot 4, 210-pound RHP with room to gain strength and mature physically. He made it look easy in his three innings on the mound. His fastball sat 84-5, topping at 86. The slider was 75-79, and the change-up was 76. Working from a high three-quarter slot and a simple delivery, he could locate his fastball and create swing and miss with the slider (5K's). He is a guy you can dream on, and there should be more to come as he continues to fill out his frame.

Cade Kunz LHP / OF / Heritage, CO / 2023

6 foot 1, 215-pound LHP with a strong and sturdy body. He is a competitive kid who understands who he is and pitched to his strengths. He made quick work of his two innings with a fastball at 84-86, 74-76 slider, and change-up at 78. He has a little crossfire delivery, created by a little coil at the top of his leg lift, which creates a little deception to his three-quarter arm slot. He wants to get better and knows he has to keep working to make that happen.
