FT. MYERS—The Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks were able to win the 6A state championship by defeating the Mosley Dolphins 10-4. This contest was a rematch of last year’s championship game and is the Mavericks’ sixth state championship in the last seven years. 2017 3B/RHP Joseph Perez (USF commit) and 2017 2B Ubaldo Lopez led the way for Archbishop McCarthy in this game.

Archbishop McCarthy struck first when Perez drove in 2016 SS Kobe Lopez (Alabama State commit) on a sacrifice fly to right field. Mosley then evened the score in the bottom half of the frame when 2016 1B Sean Maddox drove in a run with a sacrifice fly of his own.

In the top of the second, 2017 OF AJ Hendricks hit a sacrifice fly to left field that gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, the Dolphins threatened by loading the bases with one out, but Archbishop McCarthy was able to escape with a 6-4-3 double play.

The Mavericks stepped on the gas in the third inning when 2016 OF Alex Carballo (Broward State College commit) led off with a double to right center field and then Lopez singled up the middle to bring in Carballo and extend the lead to 3-1. Two more runs were plated on two Dolphin errors to give Archbishop McCarthy a 5-1 lead.

The Mavericks were able to add four more runs the very next inning, including two that came off an RBI double from Lopez. Their lead was now 9-1 heading into the fifth inning.

After Archbishop McCarthy added one more run, Mosley showed some signs of life by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the lead to 10-4. Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the comeback was too little too late as the Mavericks were able to hold them off for the final two innings and take home another state championship ring.
