Player Spotlight: Brandon Walker Continues To Shine

Brandon Walker

Orlando, FL—This weekend's Orlando Scorpions tryout brought out a ton of talent from across the state and beyond. One particular guy from the 2019 class who continues to shine is SS/RHP Brandon Walker (North Florida Christian HS, FL). He is already a very athletic, toolsy player and hasn’t even scratched the surface of what he could become. His bullpen on Friday was impressive and his stuff is already starting to project out. His fastball touched 89 mph and his breaking ball had a little more depth on it with the added velocity.

Walker is 6 feet, 170 pounds, and a very athletic kid with good tools and already put together physically. He has a great frame with a high ceiling. He has a short, quick swing with good bat speed. He already shows some power for his age with much more to come in the future. His approach and strike zone discipline at the plate will continue to improve with game repetitions. He showed good actions at shortstop with good hands. He stands up to throw, but when he throws, the ball really jumps out of his hand with carry. He shows an average major league arm now. He showed good acceleration with an easy stride and has another gear, looking like at least an above-average major league runner.

On the mound, Walker had a long, loose and live arm action at a high-3/4 slot. His fastball was 86-89 mph with arm-side run and cutting action. The curveball was a downer with depth at 71-73 mph. He takes the ball out past his hip, lands across his body and occasionally gets around the ball. He has a very quick arm but occasionally leaves it behind from the stretch, which affects his release point out front. His delivery is fluid and he seems to be repeating it more consistently to improve command.

It's hard to say at this stage where Walker will end up on the field. A lot will depend on how his frame and skills develop in the coming years. Physical maturity and training will take care of his body, and reps will help fine tune his skills. His velocity made a little jump this weekend.
