Petry Dominant in 5-0 Win for Cypress Creek

Wesley Chapel, FL - I headed over to Wesley Chapel last night to see a matchup of two MLB Draft prospects in Ethan Petry and Zack Showalter. Both faced off against each other on the mound, but the Showalter/Petry at bats were fun to watch. The stands were packed and loud for this rivalry matchup with about 20 pro scouts in attendance to see the two.

The matchup started right away as Petry led off for Cypress. Showalter came out firing, sitting 91-92 for most of the night. Petry drew a 7-pitch walk which later was followed by a Seamus Gallagher RBI single to go up 1-0.

Zack Showalter

On the other side, Petry sat 92-94 and was dominant for most of the game. A few walks late but for most of the game, the Chapel bats couldn’t touch him.

Ethan Petry

Petry would walk in his second at bat against Showalter and later single in the 5th. Max Menendez would later hit a fly ball to right resulting in an error and score two more runs for Cypress bringing it to 3-0.

Petry would have his final at bat in the 7th and leadoff with a double. That would end Showalter’s night who was dialed in for most of the outing. Showalter finished with 6.1 innings pitched, 5 hits, 4 runs (2 earned) and 14 strikeouts. Seamus Gallagher would come up with another RBI single following Showalter’s exit, and Cypress would add 1 more on an error. The Coyotes would go on to win this one 5-0 on Friday night.

Ethan Petry

Ethan Petry went all 7 for a complete game shutout allowing just 1 hit with 7 strikeouts. Guillermo Rivera recorded the only hit on the night for Wesley Chapel.

Scout Notes

2022 Ethan Petry, 3B/RHP, Cypress Creek (South Carolina)

6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Petry has established himself as a true two-way prospect this Spring. The bat was a well known commodity, but the upside on the mound continues to grow. Sat 92-94 last night with spin rates in the 2500’s. Not too much effort in a loose, quick arm. Uses all of his 6-foot-4 frame to get downhill with ease. Fastball jumps out the hand and generates a lot of swings and misses. Petry shows feel for the breaking ball which will get better as he racks up more innings. He would throw a complete game shutout going all 7 innings allowing just 1 hit with 4 walks and 7 strikeouts. Petry showed out offensively as well last night going 2 for 2 with a double and 2 walks. He faced Zack Showalter in all 4 at bats who was sitting 91-92. Drew walks in his first two ABs, then muscled a down and away slider for a single the other way in his 3rd at bat. His finished with a double to lead off the 7th inning. Uses his XL frame to his advantage with above average bat speed to get to any pitch on the plate. I am really impressed with Petry overall and he continues to rise up MLB Draft boards.

2022 Zack Showalter, RHP, Wesley Chapel (USF)

Showalter has been known to throw hard for a while now and it was more of the same last night. Sat mostly 91-92 mph for most of the night but touched a few 93s later on. 6-foot-1, 195 pound physical athletic frame. Works stretch only with a quick 3/4 arm. Fastball gets onto batters quick with riding action up in the zone. Got plenty of swings and misses last night resulting in 14 strikeouts for Showalter. He mixes a sweeping slider as well that spins tight left to right. I liked the way Showalter attacked hitters. Showed his best fastball and they couldn’t get around on it. Has the makings of a power arm at the next level.
