St Thomas Rolls To Regional Semifinals with 12-0 Six Inning Victory

Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

No 7 St Thomas Aquinas would jump out to an early 20 lead in the first inning, thanks to a home run from Caleb Roberts, and never look back. Davidson recruit Blake Hely would dominate for Aquinas on the hill. Attacking down in the zone with a heavy fastball, striking out seven and throwing a six inning shutout.

The powerful Raider offense would be held in check in the second and third innings, but a home run from Riley Rosario in the fourth would extend their lead to 4-0. A lead off double from Wade Iben, a single from Matt Arch and a walk from Andres Antonini would load the bases to leadoff the fifth. After just missing a few pitches throughout the evening, George Washing recruit Cade Fergus would drive a fastball over the left fielder’s head for a bases clearing three-run triple to extend the Raiders lead to 7-0. Fergus would then score on a sacrifice fly from Nick Vera and head to the sixth up 8-0.

With the bases loaded and no one out in the sixth, Pittsburgh recruit Andres Antonini would hi the first pitch he saw over the center field fence for a walk-off grand slam to give St Thomas Aquinas the 12-0 win in six innings and moving on to face Coral Glades in the regional semi-finals next week.

Scout Notes

Cade Fergus, OF, St Thomas Aquinas (2018)
George Washington recruit. He has a long, lanky athletic frame. A long strider, he was a 4.4 on the turn on a triple. He shows easy athletic actions with a high ceiling. Offensively, he hits slightly crouched with a short simple swing. The swing is level and a line drive approach, but could see him making a big power jump in the future.

Blake Hely RHP, St Thomas Aquinas (2018)
Hely would dominate for Aquinas on the hill. Attacking down in the zone with a heavy fastball, striking out seven and throwing a six inning shutout. The arm works clean and easy and could see him making a big velocity jump in college with more innings and strength.

Jorel Ortega, SS, Spanish River (2019)
Tennessee recruit he has a big, strong frame. Shows ball skills in the infield, while could improve first step quickness, he has quality actions at short. Offensively, there is resent strength and works with rhythm and showed above average bat speed in his two at-bats.
