CARY, NC – The USA Baseball Tournament of Stars concluded on Sunday with the Brave Team wining the gold medal game 4-0 over Free.  At the conclusion of the event the 40-man roster for the 18U National Team Trials was announced. Cal Greenfield and Reid Detmers were the two Illinois Prospects to make the first round of cuts.

Greenfield and Detmers were named to the 40-man roster where they will compete for a roster spot on the 18U National Team in Houston this September. Last year Cooper Johnson was named to 18U National Team that won Gold at the Baseball World Cup in Osaka, Japan. 

Greenfield, a Florida commit, checked in at 6-foot, 198-pounds. He ran a 7.10 60-yard dash, threw 80 mph from the crouch and had a max batting practice distance of 354.7 feet. In games he hit .250 going 3-12 with 2 RBIs, and threw out a couple base runners attempting to steal. Here is video and a report on Greenfield from this spring’s high school season.

 

3/22/16 - Florida recruit. 6-foot-1, 198-pound strong, durable catcher. Currently the top prospect in the 2017 class and a 2017 draft follow. Defensively, arm is true with plus carry from behind the plate. In between innings flashed pop times between 1.86-1.95. Clocked at a 2.08 in game pop time. Right-handed hitter, with easy juice in his bat. Went 1-for-2 with a two walks, RBI, stolen base and a run scored.

Detmers, a Louisville commit, checked in at 6-foot-2, 193-pounds. He made two appearances with one start. Over five innings pitched he allowed just three hits, two walks, and struck out seven. In his first outing he worked 87-89 mph with his fastball and showed his trademark 71-74 mph sharp breaking ball. Here is video and a report on Detmers from the 2015 PBR Future Games.

Future Games 2015 - Wide shouldered, strong 6-foot-2, 185-pound was the most impressive left-handed pitcher on the Illinois staff at the PBR Future Games. Detmers went 86-88 mph with his fastball and showed an, at times sharp, 70-72 mph curveball. Detmers is still a little raw in his delivery which makes him even more intriguing as a prospect. Flat out pounded the zone with all of his pitches. His fastball features late life, resulting in tardy swings time and time again. To make matters worse for hitters he flashed plus feel for his curveball, throwing it for strikes any time he wanted too. Put on an absolute show at the Future Games, striking out six of the seven batters he faced. The one batter lucky enough to put a ball in play, hit a weak comebacker to the mound. Also features a change-up at 74 mph.
