It is not every night that you will see a no-hitter in high school baseball. It is especially unlikely to see a combined no-hitter. So the fact that Pace High School combined for a no-hitter and fell 3-2 to Tate is a very rare occurrence. The game was undoubtedly going to be a close one, with two very talented teams, both with their ace on the mound.
2019 Florida recruit Brandon Sproat started for Pace. The lanky right-hander showed a loose, easy arm action with a lot of life. He had a full arm swing and had trouble repeating throughout the evening. The fastball worked mostly 90-93 mph, dropping off some in the fourth. He also showed a curveball a 76-79 with the harder end of the range showing more depth, and a changeup at 81-83 with fading action. Sproat would walk and hit a batter in the first, allowing a run on a fielder’s choice before recording a strikeout to end the inning.
2019 Ole Miss recruit Trey LaFleur would shine early for Tate High School. Striking out four in the first two innings, the left-hander has gotten much more comfortable on the mound. Featuring a fastball/slider combo, he showed a much improved feel for both pitches early. The arm action is clean and more compact, with the ball coming out of the hand in the same tunnel with tilt. The fstball worked 83-87 mph all evening while the slider ranged from 75-77 with two-plane tilt. The command would falter slightly in the third and fourth He would walk two and hit one in the third before allowing a run on a fielder’s choice and would allow a run on a pair of singles in the fourth. LaFleur struck out the nine hole hitter to end the fourth and would proceed to settle in and strike out 6 of the last eight hitter he faced, finishing with a final line of six innings pitched with two runs on three hits, three walks and striking out twelve.
Sproat would battle through four innings, while allowing three runs, one earned, on no hits, while both walking and striking out four. Pace would hold the lead in the fourth thank to the RBI single from Blake Cordova. A walk and hit-batter would end Sproat’s evening in the fifth, and both runner would score thanks to an error on a bunt from Mason Land and an RBI on a check swing fielder’s choice from Blake Anderson.
Gabe Castro would relieve LaFleur in the seventh and would load the bases would two outs, eventually inducing a game-ending groundout to the second baseman Jesse Sherrill to end the game and give Tate the win despite not having a hit.
