Bell Leads No. 13 Greenbrier Over Eastside

Covington, Ga - No. 13 Greenbrier made the 90 minute drive from Evans to Covington to take on the Eastside Eagles. Both teams entered the game in good form, Greenbrier having won 9 of their first 12 and Eastside 10 of 13. However, when push came to shove, Greenbrier had C/RHP David Bell (2022) and Eastside did not. Bell did it all as he blasted two home runs and went all seven on the mound to pick up the 4-1 win.

The game started out with a bang for the Wolfpack. Eastside starter LHP Holden Hall (2022) got through the first two batters with ease, but an errant pitch led to the third batter being hit. This brought Bell to the plate with two outs. Bell went down two strikes early in the count, but that did not matter for the right-handed hitter. He sent the two strike offering sailing over the right-center fence for a first inning two run homer.

Bell hopped on the mound and cruised through the order the first time through, facing the minimum. He sat 86-88 with his fastball in the first, settling in at 82-86 for the remainder of the game. Bell located his fastball to all areas of the zone, but was especially effective. He dropped in a swing and miss 11/5 breaking ball and dropped to a side arm slot several times.

Holden settled in after the first inning to strike out the side in the second and picked up another three strikeouts in the third inning. Waiting for him when he came out for the fourth inning was Bell though. Once again Bell got down two strikes, and once more he sent a two strike offering over the center field fence for a solo home run, increasing the lead to 3-0.

Greenbrier was able to add another run on to the lead in the fifth inning by way of a sacrifice fly. SS Jackson Smith (2022) led the inning off with a double into the right center gap. A sac bunt moved Smith to third base and up stepped Bell to the plate. However, Eastside made the decision to take the bat out of his hands by intentionally walking him. Uncommitted 1B Dalton Wesley (2021) got the job done though as he lifted a fly ball to deep right center, allowing the runner to tag and score.

Eastside did not go down without a fight though. CF Slade Holloway (2022) got things going with a one out triple. Holloway came out around to score the follow at-bat on a groundout by C Ethan Booth (Spoon River College commit). Bell was able to regroup, and two batters later he struck out the final batter to secure a 4-1 win.

No. 13 Greenbrier (10-3) and Eastside (10-4) will complete their two game series on Wednesday in Evans.
