The Case for No. 1: Class of 2027
May 27, 2026

The search for the undisputed No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2027 is officially on, and the depth of elite talent makes this year's debate one of the most compelling in recent memory. This class is loaded with players who boast true five-tool potential, from dynamic shortstops like Dylan Seward, who many believed would have been the top 2026 prospect, to powerful center fielders and bat-to-ball savants. On the mound, arms like Connor Salerno and Samir Mohammed are running fastballs into the upper-90s, presenting high-end starter profiles. As the summer circuit begins, these elite athletes will have every opportunity to cement their case for the top spot.
Here is a breakdown of the players with the strongest argument to be the Class of 2027's premier prospect.
THE CASE FOR NO. 1️⃣
Dylan Seward SS / Norco, CA / 2027The preeminent prospect in the class as Seward would have been the top 2026 should he have jumped up a class. At 6-foot, 180-pounds, the dynamic, switch-hitting shortstop boasts plus-tools across the board that includes unteachable burst in the form a 6.1 60-yard dash time while regularly producing triple-digit exit velocities from each side of the plate. Still more, the gifted defender makes great use of his speed with a quick first step and natural glovework that give way to a plus-arm across with athletic angles at release. The Tennessee recruit has a true five-tool profile and will be assessed at the highest level within the professional scouting community with a full summer to better cement a potential 1:1 selection. |
Connor Salerno LHP / Sun Valley, NC / 2027Last summer saw Salerno steal the show as an underclassman at East Coast Pro where he nearly received a standing ovation from the entire scouting community for the electric look that he provided against the best of the ‘26 class. At 6-foot-4, 225-pounds with durable strength on a frame that still shows signs of future development, Salerno has run the fastball into the upper 90s although he is comfortable varying velocities and intent as the fastball holds innate whiff-inducing traits out of a low ¾ slot. Featuring normal effort out front from a compact, athletic delivery, the Mississippi State recruit also exhibits advanced feel for a tight slider and changeup with an obvious starter profile. Still more, Salerno’s poised, yet competitive mound presence is sure to excite the industry as his value is assessed throughout the summer. |
Graham Houston SS / Venice, FL / 2027As the industry continues to value shortstops at a premium rate, Houston will have every opportunity to drive his stock high over the next year. A switch-hitter whose offensive production outpaces that (at the same time) of his first-round brother (Marek Houston), he holds a similar prowess with regards to a confident and (potentially) elite glove. A steady filler of the stat sheet whose tools and all around game are elevated in big situations, the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder is likely to develop much more strength in the future which will only aid in further power development. Adding to his allure among this group is a quiet intensity of expected success. |
Grant Westphal OF / Blue Valley, KS / 2027Somewhat rare to find a Kansas position player charging up this high, Westphal holds near-unicorn status (for the state), and deservingly so given the fact that his incessant motor is paired next to a five-tool profile. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound true centerfielder is a 6.5-runner with an elite first step and impacts the ball (107 mph max EV) from the left side with a tight turn and compact stroke that is near slump-proof. A bat-to-ball savant who covers the plate gracefully with explosive contact, a big summer on the circuit is sure to have the industry clamoring for the Texas recruit to be even higher on this list. |
Jacob Seamon OF / Metrolina Christian, NC / 2027Seamon is the youngest of this bunch which is important to note given his long, 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame that is quickly adding strength. Featuring what might be the sweetest left-handed stroke in the country, the incessant lag of the barrel in the zone elicits exciting hit/power potential at a high-level. Just four years after North Carolina prepster, Walker Jenkins, went fourth overall to the Twins, Seam is sure to be measured closely Jenkins because of the proximity, but his profile is different although potentially equally as alluring. Balanced in the box with an imposing presence the ceiling height has not been set, and Seamon holds an obvious case for rising to the top spot in the long term. |
Sebastian Wilson OF / IMG Academy, FL / 2027Affectionately nicknamed “Sushi”, the left-handed hitting outfielder has long been a fixture on the national scene including the past two seasons at IMG Academy (originally from Chicago, Ill.). Carrying lean, defined strength on a 6-foot, 190-pound frame that sprints to a 6.48 60-yard dash time, Wilson’s athleticism stands out almost as much as his impact bat. Screaming off the barrel with gaudy exit velocities, the bat speed is eye opening as is the dangerous swings that he gets off in all counts. Should the Tennessee recruit demonstrate the ability to stick in center field while remaining on the barrel throughout the summer, then his dynamic advanced metrics are sure to garner top of the board consideration in the long run. |
Lubin Rincon SS / Shadow Creek, TX / 2027Although Rincon has been featured in the top-10 of the class for two full years, there still seems to be a “sleeper status” to his presence amongst peers. Wide-shouldered at 6-foot-2, 180-pounds with a lean, athletic frame, his ability to slow the game down stands out as much as the balanced left-handed swing. Patient at the plate with effortless power that needs to be observed in person as it features less electric twitch than controlled aggression, his ability to make quality swing decisions is sure to intrigue the scouting community throughout the summer. Equally as talented on the defensive side with a plus-arm the summer will serve as a proving ground for the Texas recruit to announce his presence with authority. |
Samir Mohammed RHP / Jesuit, FL / 2027While the industry is quietly pushing down the value of the prep right-hander, the elite of each class maintain their precious value. At 6-foot-5, 250-pounds, Mohammed is astonishingly athletic with an imposing presence that is matched by the overall pure stuff. Climbing into the upper-90s throughout the spring with a longer, boring arm action, his heavy fastball is sure to routinely tickle triple digits while sawing off the hands of right-handed hitters. Catapulting his stock as the top right-hander in the class entering the summer was the development of a potential plus-slider that paired next to what is an innate changeup that profiles exceptionally well next to the fastball. Given the big frame, arm talent, and upward trajectory of the arsenal, Mohammed’s stock might only rise over the next year. |
Malachi Butler SS / McEachern, GA / 2027Butler’s steady rise in the class became too hard to ignore after a monster spring season, and with the promise of one of the better hit-tools in the class, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound shortstop has the tools to ultimately rise to #1. Beyond the power upside that the Georgia Tech recruit routinely displays, his willingness to adjust and change planes stands out with a high likelihood of continuing to hit at subsequent levels. One of the younger prospects in the class (17.11 at draft), the evolution of a true, impact-bat might be on display all summer with a path to the top of the class. |
Graham Keen 3B / RHP / Mt. Lebanon, PA / 2027Keen has a long, athletic 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame and dynamic delivery to go along with a quick arm that profiles as a potential frontline starter, but his value as a position player might be even higher. Leveraging his long frame to produce massive power from the right side, his flat path produces non-stop residency of the barrel in the zone, and elicits future power to all fields. The frame is sure to tack on much more strength in the future, and while his right/right profile will require more looks as a cold-weather bat, the all around athleticism should help drive solidified value. Still more, the fact that he carries the makings of a wipeout slider and one of the cleaner, more athletic deliveries in the class should serve as an enticing fallback plan. |
