PBR IA Underclass Prospect Games: Infielder Evaluations

The Prep Baseball Report IA Underclass Prospect Games event took place on Sunday, August 4, 2019. The event was held at Duane Banks Field on the campus of the U. of Iowa. The event featured prospects from the 2021 & 2022 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and numerous college coaches in attendance. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Underclass Prospect Games.

As we drill down into the statistics: 

+  7 players ran sub-4.5 Home-To-First times.
+  32 players recorded 85+ mph Exit Velocities
+  21 players recorded 80+ mph Infield Throws
+  12 players recorded 80+ mph Outfield Throws
+  12 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+  7 catchers recorded sub-2.1 Pop Times
+  29 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

inFIELDER EVALUATIONS (ALPHA)

Sam Andrews, RHP/3B, Ankeny, 2022
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 5.2 home to first time. 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. One of top overall performers at event. 4.69 home to first time. Balanced stride, barrel tip to trigger swing, some larger movements effect timing, when squared shows hard pull side contact, flashes of pop in bat with line drive and fly ball approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Athletic with good actions in field, above avg. hands and feet, moves with confidence and easy effort, above avg. carry to bag with clean loose arm action, 86 mph arm strength across infield.

Hunter Brown, RHP/1B, Southeast Polk, 2021
6-foot-6, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.82 home to first time. Body load, stays short to contact, occasional pop in bat with long levers, harder pull side fly ball contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, sure hands, accurate arm to base, 80 mph arm across infield.

Hunter Caves, SS, Alburnett, 2021
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. 4.50 home to first time. Physical with solid athleticism, square stance with high hand set away from head and body, line drive swing plane, tends to roll over top of baseball, when squared shows strength in hands and barrel, mid/pull approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Clean arm action, tends to sit back to field, shows athleticism and actions when on the move, solid accuracy to base, should improve with development and instruction, 74 mph arm across infield.

Kinnick Christensen, SS/RHP, West Marshall, 2022
6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.90 home to first time. Showed above avg. round of bp, simple swing with easy load, repeats swing well, minimal effort, consistently squared baseball with hard contact to mid/pull side of field, 82 mph exit velocity.
