2017-2018 Prospect Showcase: Pitchers Analysis

On Sunday, September 21st PBR Indiana hosted the 2017-2018 Prospect Showcase at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana.  Below we analyze the pitchers that participated in the event.

Isaiah Davis, RHP, Ben Davis HS, 2017:  The 5-foot-11, 148 pound righty pitches from a high ¾ slot with a short arm action.  Works at a quick pace.  Fastball was 74-75 mph and consistently thrown for a strike.  Throws a 12/6 curveball at 55-56 with late break.  58-60 mph changeup, but erratic in the zone.  Very athletic player.  

Grant Druckemiller, RHP, Bloomington North HS, 2017: 6-foot, 190 pound righty pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Arm action is long.  Tilt-topple type delivery.  Fastball was fairly straight at 74-78 mph.  Curveball shows gradual movement at 58-60 mph.  Also mixed in a 58-60 mph knuckle ball. 

Michael Dunkelberger, LHP, SB St. Joseph HS, 2018: An impressive 5-foot-9, 146 pound southpaw up to 81 with his fastball.  Fastball was hard with some sink and consistently in the zone.  Pitches from a ¾ slot with a quick, loose arm.  Smooth rhythm and easy effort in the delivery.  Repeats delivery well. Breaking ball was 68-69 with depth while the changeup sat 66-69.  

Aaron Ernst, RHP, Carmel HS, 2017: A 6-foot, 140 pound righty pitches from a ¾ slot with good arm speed.  Arm action is long.  Fastball was up to 78 mph with some sink, but erratic in the zone.  Slows arm down when throwing the breakingball, 58-63 mph. Changeup was thrown at near fastball arm speed with some fade at 66-68 mph. 

Kade Fleming, LHP, Evansville North HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 155 southpaw pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Shows good rhythm in the delivery and lands square.  Fastball was 67-70 with some run.  Breaking ball wwas 60-64 with gradual movement, but erratic in the zone.  Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed with some sink at 61-62.  Also throws a 63-64 mph knuckle ball. 

Jared Flueck, RHP, Colerain HS (OH), 2017: 6-foot-1, 150 pound righty pitches from a high ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Arm action is long and loose. Fastball sat 75-78 with some run and consistently in the zone.  62-65 mph curveball shows gradual movement, but erratic in the zone and slows arm down on occasion.  Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed at 60-64 with some sink and thrown for a strike.  

Jonathan Foster, RHP, Columbus East HS, 2017: 6-foot, 150 pound righty works at a quick pace.  Throws from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Arm action is long.  Fastball was up to 78 mph with some run.  Throws a 10/4 breaking ball with some depth at 62-63.  Lanky, pitchers frame. 

Will Klein, RHP, Bloomington North HS, 2017: 6-foot-3, 200 pound righty pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Arm action is short.  Struggled to repeat his delivery and tends to fall off.  Fastball sat 77-80 with slight run.  Slider sat 67-70 while the curveball sat 63-65.  Both show gradual movement, but are erratic in the zone.  Changeup was 69-71. 

Jack Lang, RHP, Hamilton Southeastern HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 155 pound righty uses a drop and drive delivery, pitching from a ¾ slot and a short arm action.  Tends to fall off towards the 1B side.  Fastball was heavy with some run at 75-77.  58-62 mph curveball breaks at an 11/5 shape with gradual movement.  Also throws a 62-64 mph slider.  Changeup sat 66-68.  

Ty Lautenschlager, RHP, West Vigo HS, 2017:  The 6-foot-4, 235 pound righty sat 78-80 with his fastball with slight run.  Pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Arm action is long with a slight wrap on the backside.  Tendency to fall off towards 1B side.  Curveball sat 64-67 with a 10/4 shape showing sharp break, but erratic in the zone.  Changeup was thrown near fastball arm speed at 70-74.  

Blake Malatestinic, RHP, Cardinal Ritter HS, 2017: A 5-foot-9, 145 pound righty was 79-83 with his fastball that he kept down in the zone and consistently thrown for a strike.  Throws an 11/5 breaking ball at 67-70 with late action and tight spin, but erratic in the zone.  His 74-76 mph changeup shows good fade and thrown for a strike. Pitches from a ¾ slot with a short, quick arm action.  Easy effort and smooth rhythm within the delivery.  Good overall athleticism.   

Charlie May, LHP, Delta HS, 2017: A 5-foot-8, 125 pound southpaw that pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Arm action is long.  Tall to fall type delivery.  Fastball was kept down in the zone at 61-65.  Throws an 11/5 breaking ball with gradual movement at 53-54.  Tends to slow his arm down when throwing the changeup.    

Jack Parisi, RHP, Homestead HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 183 pound righty sat 80-82 with his fastball with some sink.  Pitches from a ¾ slot with above average arm speed and short arm action.  Tall to fall type delivery with good rhythm throughout.  Breaking ball sits 64-68 with gradual movement while the change up sits 73-76.  

Zach Rogers, LHP, Lawrence Central HS, 2017: Tall, lanky 6-foot-2, 160 pound southpaw pitches from a ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Arm action is long.  Tall to fall type delivery.  Fastball sat 73-77 with some run and thrown for a strike.  Curveball shows a 2/8 shape with a sweeping action at 61-65; slows arm down with the CB.  Changeup sat 68-71 with fade thrown near fastball arm speed.  Good pitchers frame.  

Caleb Rush, RHP, Mt. Vernon HS, 2018: 6-foot-4, 160 pound righty was 67-71 with his fastball and kept it down in the zone.  Pitches from a ¾ slot with easy effort.  Good rhythm and direction in the delivery.  Curveball sat 60-63 while the slider was 58-62.  Slows arm down when throwing off-speed pitches.  Needs to continue to develop his off speed and get stronger.  

Michael Scalzo, RHP, Noblesville HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 240 pound righty pitches from a ¾ slot with above average arm speed and a long arm action.  Stays in line and lands square.  Fastball was 73-76 and thrown for a strike.  Slider shows a sweeping action with early break at 65-66 mph.  Slows his arm down with the changeup; shows some sink.  Splitter was 67-69 thrown for a strike. 

Bryce Thompson, RHP, Blue River Valley HS, 2017: 6-foot, 155 pound righty pitches from a high ¾ slot  with average arm speed.  Lands square with good direction.  Fastball sat 68-71 and thrown for a strike.  Curveball was 59-62 with an 11/5 shape.  Changeup was thrown near fastball arm speed and straight at 62-63.  Also mixes in a 59-62 mph knuckle ball.  

Riley Tirotta, RHP, Mishawaka Marian HS, 2017: 6-foot-3, 170 pound righty pitches from a high ¾ slot with above average arm speed.  Tall to fall type delivery and lands square.  Fastball was up to 84 and consistently in the zone.  Breaking ball sat 60-63 from an 11/5 shape with early break and thrown for a strike.  Slows arm down on the 62-64 mph changeup.  

Alexander Zarazee, LHP, Marian HS, 2017: 6-foot, 157 pound southpaw pitches from a ¾ slot with above average arm speed and a short arm action.  Slight stab on the backside.  Fastball was 71-74 mph and kept down in the zone.  Breaking ball sat 52-55 mph  with gradual movement, erratic in the zone.  Slows arm down when throwing the breaking ball.  Changeup sat 65 mph.
