Future Prospects Showcase and Educational Camp Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Future Prospects Showcase and Educational Camp took place on Sunday March 6th at the Max in McCook, IL. The showcase featured 57 prospects most of which were new to PBR. At this event we take the time to educate players on what scouts look for, the recruiting process, and the overall landscape of playing baseball at the next level.

Some of the standouts from the event include SS/OF/RHP Ben Wiegman (Carmel Catholic HS, 2020). Wiegman was one of the top overall performers at the event. He features a big arm, 88 mph from the outfield and 84 mph off the mound. He also tied for the highest exit velocity at 85 mph and ran a 7.40 60.

OF/LHP Noah DeLuga (Lake Zurich HS, 2020) was another participant at the event who shined in multiple areas. On the mound he flashed an electric left-arm, running his fastball up to 82 mph with some arm-side-run and life. He also ran a 7.32 60 and was clocked at 81 mph from the outfield. At the plate he flashed a short, quick stroke with strength through contact.

C/RHP Trevor Davis (Danville HS, 2020) is a physical left-handed hitter who is advanced defensively. Athletic actions behind the plate, with arm strength and throws on the bag. On the mound he was up to 77 mph with his fastball.

SS/RHP Jacob Mote (U-High HS, 2020) ran a 7.16 60, 80 mph across the infield and registered an 81 mph exit velocity.

SS/RHP Marc Babicz (St. Laurence HS, 2020) ran an event best 7.08 60 yard dash, was 76 mph from the outfield and 71 mph from across the infield.

C Shane McGaha (Stevenson HS, 2020) has a projectable frame and a big arm from behind the plate; 76 mph from the crouch and pop times ranged between 2.08-2.18.

LHP/1B Zach Reddinger (Morris HS, 2020) is a 6-foot-1, 165-pound, left-handed pitcher with a quick arm and a fastball that topped out at 80 mph.

RHP/SS Keaton Hopwood (Wilmington HS, 2020) has a projectable frame and quick arm. He sat 77-79 mph on the mound.

RHP Ben Hernandez (De La Salle HS, 2020) has a loose arm and repeatable delivery. He also flashed feel for three-pitches and topped out at 78 mph.

Taj Abdur-Rahman, 3B/C, Undecided (MI), 2020
5-foot-9, 147-pound, right-handed hitting multi-positional prospect. His best tool is currently his bat. Quick hands, aggressive swing with present bat speed and some juice; 81 mph exit velocity. Fluid rhythm, flashed pull power and uphill bat path. Balanced, open setup, short toe-tap stride and balance through contact. Defensively, steady hands, long arm action from a high ¾ slot at third base. Clocked at 68 mph across the infield. From behind the plate, shorter arm action and throws clocked at 65 mph from the crouch. Pop times ranged between 2.43-2.50. Also, a 7.54 runner in the 60.

Marc Babicz, SS/RHP/OF, St. Laurence, 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting SS/RHP. Defensively took drills in the infield and outfield. In the infield has a short arm action from an over the top arm angle. Accurate throws, throwing 71 mph across the infield. Athletic actions, fields the ball deep. In the outfield plays thru the ball, threw 76 mph from the outfield. Offensively hits from a crouched, spread out setup. Short load and stride. Line drive hitter with a short, uphill swing path. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. Above average runner, running the 60 at 7.08. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with a square landing. Athletic finish with regular effort. Three pitch feel for strikes. Fastball was straight at 70-73 topping out at 74 mph. Curveball has 12-6 shape at 59-63 mph. Changeup was straight at 58-62 mph.

Jack Barrett, INF, Sandburg, 2020
5-foot-6, 135-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, path stays level through the zone; 69 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced setup, pre-pitch load and short stride. Defensively, steady hands on the infield, longer exchange; long arm action, high ¾ slot and throws clocked at 62 mph across the diamond. 9.54 runner in the 60.

Alexander Barrido, INF, Riverside-Brookfield, 2021
5-foot-3, 110-pound switch-hitting infielder. Offensively, level bat path from both sides. Made more consistent contact from the right side. Balanced setup, slight load from both sides and short stride. Exit velocities of 68 mph from the right and 63 mph from the left. Defensively, on the infield, steady hands and a tendency to field on his heels. Long arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 56 mph. 9.13 runner in the 60.

Matthew Birtman, LHP/OF, Deerfield, 2020
5-foot-7, 120-pound left-handed hitting LHP/OF. On the mound uses a full delivery working from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with a deliberate landing. Fastball was straight at 67-69 topping out at 70 mph. Slider sat 61-63 mph. Changeup showed cutting action at 61-64 mph. Will continue to improve with more backside involvement in delivery. Defensively has a short, quick arm action from an over the top arm slot. Plays thru the ball with a quick, clean exchange and average hands. Threw 71 mph from the outfield. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a short leg lift stride and average balance. Slap hitter with a level swing path. 70 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.71.

Colin Bohanek, 3B/OF, Marist, 2020
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting 3B/OF with an athletic frame. Offensively hits from a balanced, slightly open stance. Short stride with average balance. Line drive hitter with a short, level swing path. Flashed a fast bat. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.57. Took drills in both the infield and outfield. Has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Defensively showed better in the outfield. Plays thru the ball, fields out in front, with fluid footwork. Threw 74 mph from the outfield. In the infield showed soft hands with athletic actions. Threw 70 mph across the infield.

Carl Braxton, OF, Mount Carmel, 2020
5-foot-7, 140-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short, linear stride, and good balance. Line drive hitter with a short swing path. 71 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.48. In the field displays a long arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Plays thru the ball with a clean exchange and average hands. Threw 71 mph from the outfield.

Jack Bruington, LHP/INF, Plainfield South, 2021
5-foot-11, 180-pound, two-way prospect with an advanced frame. Offensively, flashed bat speed and looseness in his swing; 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Open setup, short stride and a long bat path. Defensively, athletic actions and soft hands at first base. Feel for the position, fluid footwork, clean exchange; short arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 60 mph across the diamond. 8.41 runner in the 60. On the mound, smooth rhythm, stays on-line, square landing, athletic finish with regular effort in his delivery. Flashes a quick arm out of a high ¾ window. Fastball thrown for strikes, sat 69-70 mph. Features a cutter, slider/slurve action, 2/8 shape, thrown for strikes and clocked at 64-65 mph. Changeup, thrown for strikes, down in the zone, 65-67 mph.

Coyne Burns, INF/LHP, Wheaton North, 2020
5-foot-5, 140-pound two-way prospect. Left-handed hitter, level bat path, compact swing and flashed bat speed. Wide setup, no load, short stride and average balance through contact; 70 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, quick, clean release on the infield. Long arm action and clocked at 60 mph across the diamond. 8.49 runner in the 60. On the mound, the left-hander stays on-line, lands square and regular effort; long arm action out of a high ¾ window. Fastball, straight action and clocked at 60-62 mph.  Curveball, thrown for strikes, 1/7 shape and ranged between 53-55 mph. Changeup, down in the zone, 52-54 mph.

John Czarney, RHP/INF, Plainfield East, 2021
5-foot-9, 120-pound two-way prospect. On the mound, easy effort, stays on-line and some rhythm throughout. Short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball clocked at 56-60 mph. Changeup, tendency to slow arm speed and ranged between 53-56 mph. Knuckleball clocked at 49-52 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, level bat path and line-drive approach. Narrow setup, long stride and average balance. 59 mph exit velocity. Defensively, clean exchange, long arm action and clocked at 51 mph across the diamond. 9.01 runner in the 60.

Trevor Davis, C/RHP, Danville, 2020
5-foot-10, 175-pound two-way prospect. Advanced defensive catcher with present arm strength and athletic actions; 72 mph from the crouch. Over-the-top arm action, true ball with carry and on the bag. Offensively, left-handed hitter, with bat speed and strength through contact; 78 mph exit velocity. Stays on top of the baseball, consistent hard contact and a gap-to-gap approach. Balanced setup, pre-pitch load, short stride and good balance. 8.19 runner in the 60. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, quick, long arm from an over-the-top slot. Delivery has rhythm, lands closed, stays on-line and head snap finish. Fastball thrown for strikes and clocked 75-77 mph. Curveball worked 12/6, and ranged between 60-64 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, sat 69-71 mph.

Noah DeLuga, OF/LHP, lake Zurich, 2020
5-foot-10, 155-pound left-handed hitting OF/LHP with an athletic frame. Offensively hits from a narrow setup with a short stride and good balance. Gap to gap hitter with a short swing path and fluid rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.32. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Plays thru the ball with a clean exchange and fluid footwork. Threw 81 mph from the outfield. Projects very well on the mound. Works from a ¾ arm angle with a long, loose arm action, and lightning quick arm. Tall and fall delivery with a hesitation at balance point. Square landing with an athletic finish. Fastball showed late sinking action at 81-82 mph for strikes. Curveball has 1-7 shape with gradual action at 68-70 mph. Changeup has sinking and fading action at 7-71 mph.

Austin Divello, RHP/OF, Oak Park-River Forest, 2020
5-foot-7, 120-pound left-handed hitting RHP/OF with a thin, lanky frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, quick arm action. Slight wrap on the backside. Drop and drive delivery with a back turn at balance point. Works in line with home plate with an athletic finish. Fastball was straight at 72-74 topping out at 75 mph. Curveball showed 10-4 shape at 65-68 mph, projects to throw a slider in the future. Changeup sat 67-68 mph. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry throwing 79 mph from the outfield. Plays thru the ball with athletic actions and fluid footwork. Natural instincts in the outfield. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a leg lift trigger, hangs in the air with a long, linear stride. Gap to gap hitter with fluid rhythm. 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.74.

Jaxon Elliott, C/1B, Mount Vernon, 2020
5-foot-11, 185-pound, two-way prospect with a solid lower half. Offensively, wide, balanced setup, pre-pitch load, no stride and finishes on his backside. Average bat speed and uphill path through the zone; 73 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively worked out at first base and catcher. On the infield, steady hands, clean exchange, short arm action and clocked at 65 mph across the diamond. Behind the plate, steps open during his exchange, short arm action and clocked at 67 mph from the crouch. Pop times ranged between 2.30-2.44.

Vincent Esposito, INF/LHP, Rock Island, 2020
6-foot-2, 190-pound two-way prospect with a solid, athletic frame. Offensively, bat speed, strength through contact and the ball jumps off his bat at times; 84 mph exit velocity. Fluid rhythm, uphill bat path and a gap-to-gap approach. Open setup, pre-pitch load, short stride and average balance. Defensively, feel for first base, athletic fielding position; high ¾ slot and throws clocked at 62 mph across the diamond. 8.37 runner in the 60. On the mound, delivery has some rhythm, stays on-line, finishes athletically and regular effort. Throws a 2-seam and 4-seam fastball with similar velocity. 2-seam flashes arm-side-run and sinking action, 69-70 mph, touching 71. Changeup, good feel, flashes sink and clocked at 60-62 mph.

Jacob Ferry, OF/RHP, Oswego East, 2020
5-foot-10, 135-pound left-handed hitting OF/RHP. Offensively hits from a wide base with a smooth load and leg kick stride. Gap to gap hitter with a short path and fluid rhythm. Showed good balance and a fast bat. 76 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.75. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Plays thru the ball with a quick, clean exchange, and fluid footwork. Threw 73 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short, stiff arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a square landing. Fastball was straight at 68-70 mph for strikes. Curveball has 12-6 shape with depth at 62-64 mph for strikes. Changeup was straight at 66-67 mph.

Austin Ford, SS/RHP, Sandwich, 2020
5-foot-10, 140-pound two-way prospect. Right-handed hitter, balanced setup, short stride and average bat speed; 71 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, steady hands and fields deep on the infield; long, over-the-top arm action clocked at 63 mph across the infield. 8.01 runner in the 60. On the mound, works from the stretch only with some rhythm.  Long arm action and a high ¾ slot. Fastball, some arm-side action on his two-seam, clocked at 64-67 mph. Curveball ranged between 56-61 mph. Changeup sat 58-62 mph.

Omar Garcia, INF, De La Salle, 2020
5-foot-9, 145-pound right-handed hitting infielder with an athletic frame. Offensively, fluid rhythm, flashed bat speed, uphill path with an opposite field approach; 72 mph exit velocity. Balanced setup, smooth load, short stride and average balance. Defensively, soft, confident hands and athletic fielding position on the infield. Short arm action, high ¾ to over-the-top slot and clocked at 67 mph across the diamond. 8.29 runner in the 60.

Joshua Griffin, INF/RHP, Marion, 2020
5-foot-8, 145-pound well-proportioned two-way prospect. Right-handed hitter, flashed bat speed, strength through contact and an uphill bat path; 64 mph exit velocity. Fluid rhythm, wide setup, smooth load, short heel lift stride and a gap-to-gap approach. Defensively, quick exchange and easy, short arm; throws clocked at 64 mph across the infield. Also, a 7.75 runner in the 60. On the mound, delivery has rhythm and regular effort. Long, quick arm out of a high ¾ window. Fastball clocked at 70-72 mph. Curveball worked 12/6 and ranged between 59-63 mph. Changeup sat 65-67 mph.

Isaiah Gudeman, C, Morton, 2020
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Defensively, advanced receiver during bullpens; flexible, soft hands and agile blocking balls to both sides. Short arm action, high ¾ slot clocked at 68 mph from the crouch. Pop times ranged between 2.12-2.22. Offensively, balanced, wide setup, exaggerated pre-pitch load, short stride, average balance, gap-to-gap approach and a 76 mph exit velocity off of a tee. 8.15 runner in the 60.

Ben Hernandez, RHP, De La Salle, 2020
5-foot-11, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, loose arm action. Tall and fall, slow paced delivery. Creates slight crossfire action. Three pitch mix, for strikes. Fastball showed slight running action at 75-76 topping out at 78 mph. Curveball has 12-6 sharp with sharp breaking action at 55-60 mph. maintained arm speed on changeup with sinking action at 63-65 mph. Young arm to follow.

Adam Hoff, INF, Kenosha Tremper (WI), 2021
5-foot-4, 120-pound right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, short bat path, gets extension through contact. Stays on top of the baseball, line-drive approach and flashed the ability to backspin baseballs; 71 mph exit velocity. Defensivley, steady hands and fields the ball deep at times on the infield. Long arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 60 mph across the infield. 8.71 runner in the 60.

Keaton Hopwood, RHP/INF, Wilmington, 2020
6-foot, 140-pound two-way prospect with a projectable frame. On the mound, tall and fall delivery, smooth rhythm, stays on-line and finishes athletically. Quick, short arm action from an over-the-top window. Fastball, flashed late life, downhill tilt and clocked at 77-79 mph. Curveball worked between 12/6, 11/5 shape and sat 60-62 mph. Changeup ranged between 62-65 mph. Offensively, loose swing, level bat path and the ability to backspin a baseball. Narrow setup, pre-pitch load and a line-drive approach; 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, soft hands, athletic fielding positon and gets tall on his exchange. Short arm action, over-the-top slot and clocked at 69 mph across the diamond. 8.21 runner in the 60.

Mason Hsieh-Bailey, OF, Oak Park-River Forest, 2020
5-foot-7, 115-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, with an athletic frame. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Plays thru the ball with a quick, clean exchange and quick footwork. Threw 73 mph from the outfield. Offensively hits from a balanced, open stance with a smooth load, and leg lift stride. Pull hitter with fluid rhythm. 70 mph exit velocity from a tee. Solid runner, running the 60 at 7.22.

Camden Janik, C/1B, Wauconda, 2021
5-foot-5, 157-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Offensively, aggressive swing, hard contact and strength through contact; 71 mph exit velocity off of a tee. Balanced, open setup, pre-pitch load, normal stride and fluid rhythm. Uphill bat path with some length and a gap-to-gap approach. Defensively, worked out at first base and catcher. Steady hands and throws from a short over-the-top slot. Clocked at 58 mph across the infield. Behind the plate, athletic action, clean exchange, short arm action, clocked at 63 mph. Would benefit from improved direction coming out of the crouch. Pop times ranged between 2.31-2.43. 8.68 runner in the 60.

Brett Kuczynski, C/3B, Downers Grove South, 2021
5-foot-5, 130-pound, multi-positional prospect. Offensively, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, pre-pitch load, leg-kick timing trigger and short bat path. 68 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, on the infield, steady hands, long arm action and high ¾ slot; 57 mph across the diamond.  Behind the plate, similar arm action as on the infield; clocked at 55 mph from the crouch. Pop times ranged between 2.70-2.83.

Jack Landmesser, INF/RHP, Undecided, 2020
5-foot-5, 120-pound two-way prospect. Offensively, left-handed hitter with a simple, spray approach. Consistently found the barrel; 65 mph exit velocity. Open setup, no load, short stride and uphill bat path. Defensively, flashed soft hands, quick release and body control on the infield. Advanced back-hand and run-through play. Short, clean arm action, ability to throw from multiple slots and clocked at 61 mph across the diamond. 8.0 runner in the 60. On the mound, compact, repeatable delivery with easy effort. Short arm action out of a high ¾ window. Fastball clocked at 63-64 mph. Curveball, short break and ranged between 57-60 mph. Changeup sat 54-56 mph.

William Le Pretre, RHP/SS, De La Salle, 2020
5-foot-10, 118-pound two-way prospect with a lean projectable frame. On the mound, smooth delivery, short and quick arm out of a high ¾ slot. Stays on-line, lands square and athletic finish. Fastball sat 73-75 mph. Curveball flashed short break and sat 62-63 mph. Changeup, fastball arm speed, arm-side-run and clocked at 69-71 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, with an 80 mph exit velocity. Open setup, loads his hands, stride gets back to even and average balance. Long, uphill bat path with a pull approach. Defensively, athletic fielding position, fluid footwork and flashed soft hands on the infield. Loose arm, ¾ slot, accurate throws clocked at 72 mph. 7.79 runner in the 60.

Bryce Luckey, INF/RHP, Moline, 2020
5-foot-2, 109-pound two-way prospect. Offensively, balanced setup, slight pre-pitch load, normal stride and collapses on his backside. Long, level bat path; 61 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, short, athletic arm action, from a ¾ slot on the infield; clocked at 59 mph across the diamond. On the mound, works from the stretch only. Smooth rhythm, stays on-line and easy effort. Fastball/changeup repertoire. Fastball clocked at 60-62 mph. Changeup ranged between 55-58 mph.

Ryan Maloney, C, Providence Catholic, 2020
5-foot-11, 170-pound, right-handed hitting catcher. Offensively, flashed bat speed, uphill bat path and a gap-to-gap approach; 82 mph exit velocity. Balanced setup, pre-pitch load, and leg-lift timing trigger. Defensively, comes out of the crouch athletically with a quick release; ¾ arm slot and clocked at 67 mph from the crouch. Pop times ranged between 2.32-2.43. Ran an 8.21 laser-timed 60.

Pedro Martinez, RHP, Minooka, 2020
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Works exclusively from the stretch. Tall and fall, online delivery with a toe closed landing. Showed a three pitch mix for strikes. Fastball was straight at 70-71 topping out at 72 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with good spin at 59-62 mph. Showed feel for his changeup that has fading action at 61-62 mph.

Shane McGaha, C, Stevenson, 2020
6-foot, 153-pound long-limbed, projectable, right-handed hitting catcher. Defensively, advanced arm strength for his age; True flight with carry, clocked 76 mph from the crouch. Pop times ranged between 2.08-2.18. Athletic actions, clean release and good body control behind the plate. Offensively, balanced, tall setup, short stride and strength through contact; 85 mph exit velocity. Compact swing, short path and good balance. 7.61 runner in the 60.

Ronan Meyer, LHP/INF, Undecided, 2020
6-foot-1, 180-pound two-way prospect with a solid lower half. Offensively, present bat speed, aggressive swings and flashed pull power; 80 mph exit velocity. Tall open setup, leg-lift timing trigger and an uphill bat path. Defensively, reliable hands, clean release and quick arm across the diamond; 68 mph across the diamond. 9.09 runner in the 60. On the mound, delivery has some rhythm, stays on-line with regular effort. Fastball, thrown for strikes, slight arm-side-run and clocked at 71-73 mph, touching 74. Curveball lacked consistency but flashed sharp action, depth, 1/7 shape, 58-63 mph. Changeup maintains arm speed, straight action and ranged between 62-65 mph.

Hayden Mikesell, OF/RHP, Marist, 2020
5-foot-9, 140-pound right-handed hitting OF/RHP. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short, leg lift stride and average balance. Gap to gap hitter with fluid rhythm and a long swing path. Gets to front side early. 68 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.44. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Plays thru the ball with slower actions and a clean exchange. Threw 72 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with an open landing. Fastball showed slight running action at 70-71 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with depth, thrown with fastball arm speed at 58-60 mph. Changeup was straight at 63-65 mph.

Brock Minor, RHP/INF, Paris, 2020
5-foot-6, 170-pound two-way prospect. On the mound, smooth rhythm, regular effort and throws strikes. Short arm action out of a ¾ window. Fastball ranged between 61-65 mph, touching 66. Curveball 11/5 shape and sat 57-60 mph. Changeup sat 60-61 mph. Knuckleball some tumble action, 52-53 mph. Offensively, compact swing, hard contact and strength in swing; 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Open setup, smooth pre-pitch load, short stride and average balance. On the infield, flashed soft hands and a clean transfer. Throws from a high ¾ slot and clocked at 62 mph across the diamond. 9.42 runner in the 60.

Jacob Mote, INF, U-High, 2020
6-foot-1, 150-pound, projectable, right-handed hitting infielder with tools. Above-average runner in the 60, 7.16. Offensively, bat speed and level path through the hitting zone. Open wide setup, pre-pitch load and short toe-tap timing trigger. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, loose, quick arm action, accurate throws with carry across the diamond, 80 mph.

Patrick Mulcahey, RHP/INF, Normal Community, 2021
5-foot-8, 158-pound two-way prospect. Offensively, balanced setup, no load, short stride and average balance through contact. 72 mph exit velocity. Defensively, flashed soft hands, clean exchange and athletic fielding position at times; short arm action, high ¾ slot and clocked at 63 mph across the diamond. 8.96 runner in the 60. On the mound, delivery has some rhythm and some effort. Tall and fall delivery, throws uphill at times; short arm action out of a high ¾ window. Fastball sat 63-65 mph.
