Indiana Scout Blog : Notes on Lake Central & Center Grove Prospects

3/29 CENTER GROVE VS. COLUMBUS EAST

Drew Culbertson, SS, Center Grove HS, 2023 University of Missouri recruit

The Missouri recruit is an exceptional athlete standing at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds. His feet carry him in the infield, showing tons of quickness laterally as well as moving downhill. He tends to field the ball a bit deep, but shows advanced arm strength with the ability to carry the ball across the infield from the 6-hole. Offensively, the first thing that jumps out is the whip that he creates - a loose, well-sequenced swing that is exceptionally quick. He has an athletic setup and uses a leg kick stride for timing while maintaining rhythm in the barrel. Culbertson picked up two hits, including a home run to LCF, in this early season look.

3/30 LAKE CENTRAL VS. BLOOMINGTON SOUTH

Griffin Tobias, RHP/SS, Lake Central HS, 2024 Indiana University recruit

Tobias has taken tremendous strides this offseason - adding strength and size to an already uber-athletic frame. The Indiana recruit was flat-out electric in the first outing of his junior year, throwing 3.2 IP while allowing just 2 H, 0 ER, and striking out 5. Griffin moves down the mound with exceptional quickness and his arm speed was absolutely electric - producing a fastball that sat 88-91 T 93 mph. Tobias has always spun a very good breaking ball, working 73-75 mph on a slurvey-type slider that got soft contact & S/M in this look, and flashing a sinking, 77-80 mph changeup. Aside from electric stuff, Griffin attacked the zone, throwing 68% strikes on the night, including 77% 1st-pitch strikes.
