LAFAYETTE- Frontier defeated Lafayette Central Catholic in the regular season en route to a 26-4 overall record. However, that was the regular season and last night’s matchup between the two teams were the playoffs.  Over the last four years there has been no one better than Lafayette Central Catholic (LCC) in the state of Indiana. The Knights have rattled off four consecutive Class A State Championships.

Think about these numbers; LCC is 26-0 in the last four years of the state playoffs. They have outscored their opponents 244-33 in those 26 games, with an average game score of 9.4-1.3. They are not only winning Class A baseball, but they are dominating it.

LCC proved its dominance once again in this year’s sectional round, taking home the title with a 2-0 victory in the championship game. Do not be surprised by that score as this sectional is one of the toughest in Class A baseball, and they have actually won by a much larger winning margin in the regional than the sectional.

Frontier gave LCC their best shot, but could not come up with the big hit.  Frontier’s senior pitcher, Hunter Gladish, retired the first 11 hitters of the game before junior Evan Kennedy broke up the perfect game bid with a two out double. Gladish would work around the double and a walk to survive the fourth.

In the fifth, however, freshman Jackson Anthrop led off the inning with a double and scored on a Luke Fusiek sac fly.

The Knights would add an insurance run on a Kennedy home run in the sixth. Kennedy’s homerun was crushed to center field and may still be in flight. It was a no doubter as soon as the pitch left Gladish’s hand.

That would be all the run support senior Andrew Hubertz would need. Hubertz was not electric, but pitched really well. The senior scattered five hits and struck out eight. The difference in the game was LCC’s defense. They made all of the routine plays, and most importantly took three hits away from Frontier that could have changed the outcome of the game.

LCC will be heading to their fifth straight Regional and will face 15-15 Rockville on Saturday at 11AM.
