MW Futures Tryouts, Top 5 Prospects



On Tuesday June 5th, Prep Baseball Report Indiana held a Midwest Futures Games Tryouts for 2014 and 2015 prospects at Roncalli HS.  Below are the Top 5 prospects from the showcase.

1.  Tyler Ward, RHP/SS, Heritage Hills HS, 2015:  Ward was an impressive 6-foot, 155 pound freshman offensively, defensively, and on the mound.  In the field he shows athleticism and the ability to pick it.  His range is good, and shows a strong arm across the diamond at 82 mph.  On the mound he’s extremely loose with a quick arm producing a 82-85 mph fastball with good movement.  His breaking ball is a plus pitch for his age at 68-69 mph, and throws a changeup at 71-74 mph.  At the plate, Ward shows good plate awareness with a balanced, level swing.  His bat speed is quick, producing good pop.  Ward ran a 7.3 sixty at the event.  He’s a high follow in the 2015 class.

2.  Drue Tranquill, OF, Ft. Wayne Carroll, 2014:  Tranquill is a 6-foot-2, 190 pound outfielder that shows good projectability as an incoming sophomore.  He ran an event best 6.8 sixty.  In the outfield he shows good quickness and a plus arm at 89 mph.  His throws are accurate and show good carry.  At the plate he sets up with a wide , athletic base.  His hands work, allowing him to barrel up most balls.  He possesses good strength producing a lot of pop.  Tranquill will be a member of Team Indiana at the upcoming Mid-West Futures games at the University of Illinois August 3-5. 

3.  Alex Boos, OF/IF/RHP, Cathedral HS, 2014:  Boos is a 5-foot-10, 150 pound all-around baseball player, with the ability to play outfield, infield, pitch, and catch.  From the outfield and in the infield he shows a strong, accurate arm at 82-84 mph.  He shows good mechanics and range at both positions.  At the plate he has a good approach with excellent plate awareness.  His load is good and stays balanced throughout his swing.  His swing plane is slightly uphill, and shows the ability to hit to all fields.  Boos projects to hit for average at the next level.  On the mound he throws three pitches for a strike.  His fastball sits at 82-84 mph, and throws two off speed pitches; a 66-69 mph breaking ball and a 73-76 mph changeup.  Boos will be a part of team Indiana at the upcoming Mid-West Futures games at the University of Illiniois Ausgust 3-5.

4.  Tyler Zimske, C/OF, Homestead HS, 2014: Zimske is a 6-foot-1, 190 pound solid catcher in the 2014 class.  He showcased the best pop time at the event at 1.95.  He was a consistent 1.95-2.1 with his pop time. Zimske has good arm strength for a catcher at 78 mph. At the plate he shows projectable pop with good bat speed and gets to extension well.  He shows good speed for a catcher, running a 7.2 sixty.

5.  Devin Mann, SS/OF, Columbus North HS, 2015:  Mann is a 6-foot-2, 170 pound projectable infielder in his class.   He displays good actions in the field, is smooth, and has the ability to pick it.  At the plate he starts with a wide base, and an athletic approach.  His hands work and gets to extension well, showing good projectable pop with the ability to hit to all fields.  Mann is a 2015 prospect to keep an eye on.  Mann ran a 6.98 sixty at the event.
