Nolan Watson earns Midwest Future Games MVP

After three days of high-level baseball, the third-annual Midwest Future Games concluded Sunday with the top Class of 2015 prospects and a select few 2016s from eight states competing at Indiana University before a packed house of college coaches and pro scouts.

The overall talent was, in a word, remarkable. So much so, in fact, it was easy to forget that the players on the field were 15 or 16 years old.

With so many talented players in attendance, it was difficult to identify a most valuable player over the course of 12 games. But after looking through the numbers, one name clearly emerged to the fore: Nolan Watson (Lawrence North HS, IN).

Playing on Team Indiana, Watson earned Midwest Future Games MVP after the 6-foot-2, 185-pound RHP/OF delivered on the mound, at the plate and in the field. Watson opened up with a splash when he struck out five and yielded one hit in his two-inning stint. His fastball sat 88-89 mph while throwing his 73-74 mph curveball for strikes. Watson also went 2-for-2, which included a two-run triple to right-center field in the third inning, and scored two runs during Indiana’s 6-6 tie against Wisconsin.

On Sunday, Watson collected another hit. He also showed off his plus arm from the outfield (92 mph) when he threw a flat-footed laser from right field to the catcher.

Watson becomes the first player from Indiana to receive the MVP award. Last year, Missouri left-handed hitting catcher Colby Fitch (Louisville recruit) earned MVP. In 2011, Illinois SS/RHP Ryne Roper (Illinois recruit) was named MVP.
