On the Hunt: In-depth Look At High-Ceiling Uncommitted Underclassmen

This week's On the Hunt features a host of athletic 2018's and 2019's with big arms, and a chance to be two-way players at the next level.

Brandon Smith, RHP, Saginaw Heritage, MI, 2018
Smith’s durable 6-foot-5, 195-pound frame with broad shoulders is enough to catch any recruiter’s attention, but it is his quick, loose arm that will elevate him in the future. The big right-hander is still somewhat raw on the mound having not logged massive amounts of innings playing in Michigan, but he already shows the ability to control a three-pitch mix including a fastball (83-86), curveball (71-72), and changeup (74-76). All three pitches are thrown with fastball arm speed out of a high ¾ arm slot. Smith’s secondary offerings will separate him from the pack in the future. His curveball is already a swing and miss pitch with 11/5 shape, and is thrown hard with tight spin. Smith’s changeup shows arm side fade with good speed differential from his fastball. As he continues to log innings and mature, Smith could make a big jump in the near future.
