The PBR Westfield Top Prospect Showcase at Round Tripper Sports Academy featured several talented prospects for each class in the state of Indiana.  Below is a list of all prospects who attended the event including the Top 15 players. 

 
1.  Matthew Gatewood, LHP/OF, South Decatur HS, 2013:  Gatewood is a 6-foot-1 inch LHP/OF with good athleticism and strong build.  On the mound he shows a high three quarter arm slot with a loose, quick arm producing a fastball at 86-88 mph, topping out at 89.   He throws a 71-76 mph changeup that stays down in the zone, along with a 72-73 mph breaking ball.  From the outfield Gatewood shows good range and a strong arm at 90 mph.  At the plate he shows a wide base with good balance.  His swing plane is slightly uphill, and a little long with pop potential.  Gatewood posted a 4.91 forty time at the event.

2.  Max Gray, RHP/3B, Lawrence North HS, 2014:  Gray is 5-foot-11 inch, 170 pound RHP/3B.  On the mound he shows a high three quarter arm slot with good arm action and mechanics.  His fastball is consistently 81-82 mph, touching 84-85 on occasion.  Gray’s breaking ball shows good tilt and is consistently in zone at 68-71 mph.  He’s continuing to develop his changeup.  From the field Gray shows a good approach with the ability to pick it.  Across the diamond he shows a strong arm at 80-83 mph.  At the plate he shows a good approach with a balanced set up.  Gray shows a compact swing and gets to extension.  He displays good bat speed with pop up the middle and to left.  Gray is a high follow in the 2014 class.

3.  Tyler Thompson, LHP/OF, Penn High School, 2012:  Thompson is a 6-foot, 175 pound RHP/OF.  Thompson is an uncommitted senior that uses a high three quarter arm slot with good arm action.  With his fastball he is consistently 83-86 mph with movement.  Thompson’s breaking ball is 65-69 mph and shows good command. His changeup has progressed since last season with more movement, and currently sits in the low 70’s.

4.  Jack Thompson, OF/LHP, Carmel High School, 2013:  Thompson is a 6-foot, 190 pound outfielder that shows good athleticism.  Thompson shows some speed running a 5.02 forty, and has a good arm from the outfield at 81 mph.  He comes through the ball well with good defensive mechanics.  At the plate from the left side, he shows a wide base with good balance.  His swing plane is slightly uphill, producing good pop. 

5.  Brett Schultheis, RHP/1B, Franklin High School, 2012:  Schultheis is a 6-foot-3 inch, 205 pound RHP with a strong build.  He shows good arm strength with a fastball at 80-84 mph, touching 85-86. His mechanics still need refined, but shows good projectability at the next level.  His best off speed pitch is a split finger at 64 mph.  Schultheis’ second off speed pitch is a 69-73 mph breaking ball. 

6.  Mike Hammel, C/3B, Cathedral High School, 2013:  Hammel is a 5-foot-11 inch, 190 pound C/3B.  As a catcher Hammel shows a strong arm at 78 mph and produces pop times in the 1.90-2.06 range.  His quickness and receiving need to improve, but shows projectability behind the plate at the next level.  From 3B, Hammel shows a solid glove and strong arm across the diamond at 81 mph.  At the plate he shows a strong, wide base.  He’s a little stiff with his lower half at times, but gets to extension well allowing him to get the barrel through the zone. 

7.  Greg Simpson, SS/3B, Plainfield High School, 2013:  Simpson is a 6-foot-2 inch, 170 pound SS/3B.  From the infield Simpson displays good fielding mechanics with soft hands and the ability to pick it.  He shows good range, especially to his left.  Across the diamond he is 74 mph.  At the plate he stands tall with an open stance.  He gets to extension well getting the barrel through the zone.  Simpson projects to hit for average at the next level with some pop.

8.  Hunter Smith, C/MI, Plainfield High School, 2014:  Smith is a 5-foot-9 inch, 175 pound sophomore catcher.  Smith shows a quick release producing pop times in the 1.91-2.0 range.  He shows the ability to block the ball well for a sophomore.  From the infield he shows the ability to field the routine balls well, with some range to his left.  At the plate he shows a balanced approach and gets to extension.  He shows some pop up the middle and to the right side. 

9.  Conner Beidelman, OF/RHP, Greenwood High School, 2013: Beidelman is a 5-foot-9 inch, 165 pound junior that is 74-76 from the OF. On the mound he’s 76-78 mph with his fastball with good arm action. He works slightly uphill on the mound. He throws two plus off speed pitches; a 68 mph breaking ball and 68-70 mph changeup. At the plate he shows a good base with an uphill swing plane. Beidleman has short and compact swing.

10.  Justin Dunham, 2B/SS, Avon High School, 2013:  Dunham is a 5-foot-7 inch, 140 pound middle infielder.  In the infield he shows good defensive actions with soft hands and the ability to pick it.  He shows good range and projects as a 2B at the next level.  Across the diamond he is 76 mph.  At the plate Dunham shows a slightly open stance with a slightly uphill swing plane.  He gets to extension well and shows some pop to the left side. 

11.  Blaize Kelly, RHP/1B, Alexandria Monroe High School, 2015:  Kelly is a 6-foot, 165 pound RHP. On the mound he shows a high three quarter arm slot and strong arm for a freshman at 78-79 mph with his fastball.  He throws two off speed pitches; a 64-68 mph breaking ball and 68 mph changeup.  With refined mechanics and continued growth he expects to increase his velocity. 

12.  Tony Giannini, SS/OF, Cathedral High School, 2014:  Giannini is a 5-foot-10 inch, 170 pound sophomore SS/OF with a strong build.  From the infield Giannini shows a good arm at 78 mph.  He shows the ability to field routine balls well along with a quick release.  At the plate Giannini shows a strong lower half with a wide base.  When getting his front foot down in time he gets to extension well with producing some pop.  

13.  Kevin Hammond, RHP/1B, Franklin Central High School, 2014:  Hammond is a 6-foot-3 inch, 150 pound sophomore pitcher.  Hammond is a tall, lanky pitcher with long limbs and a high three quarter arm slot.  He shows good arm action with a 76-78 mph fastball, 60-61 breaking ball, and a high 60’s changeup.  Expect a velocity jump as he adds more strength. 

14.   Andrew Sparks, RHP, Beech Grove High School, 2014:  Sparks is a 6-foot, 160 pound sophomore pitcher. Sparks works from a three quarter arm slot with good arm action.  He shows good mechanics for a sophomore and shows a fastball consistently at 76-78 mph.  Sparks throws two off speed pitches; a 64-68 mph breaking ball and a 68 mph changeup with some sink action. 

15.  Alex Kryah, 3B/RHP, Lawrence Central High School, 2013:  Kryah is a 5-foot-10 inch, 190 pound junior 3B/RHP.  From the infield Kryah is 78 mph across the diamond.  On the mound he shows a fast, pump delivery with a high leg quick and works at a quick pace.  His fastball is consistently 76-79 mph and throws a cutter at 75-76.  Kryah possesses two off speed pitches; a 64-69 mph breaking ball and a 72-73 mph changeup.

 

Best of the Rest (Alphabetical Order)

Colton Ames, C/OF, Bluffton High School, 2014: Behind the plate Ames blocked the ball well. At the plate when he was able to get extension he drove the ball well to the left side.

Logan Beaman, LHP/OF, Cardinal Ritter High School, 2014: Beaman moved well in the outfield showing good defensive actions with his arm topping out at 72 mph. At the plate he gets his hands through the ball well with some pop to the right side.

Adam Brown, 2B/RHP, Delta High School, 2012: Brown is a middle infielder that showed good range with his arm up to 74 mph. At the plate Brown projects as a line drive hitter.

Jack Dynes, C/OF, North Central High School, 2013: Dynes is a catching prospect with a best pop time of 2.16. At the plate Dynes projects to be a line drive hitter.

Cody Edwards, 3B, Columbus East High School, 2013: Edwards is a big bodied third baseman with a solid defensive mechanics. His arm across the infield was at 73 mph.

Seth Eldridge, RHP/3B, Carroll High School, 2014: Eldridge is a strong corner infielder/right handed pitcher. On the mound Eldridge sat consistently at 76-77 with a good curve and knuckleball. At the plate he has the ability to produce good power.

Matt Haskell, 1B/OF, North Central High School, 2013: Haskell is a 6 foot, 170 pound first baseman that should the ability to pick the ball out of the dirt well. He moved well fielding ground balls and his arm was 75 mph across the diamond.

Casey Looker, OF/3B/RHP, Goshen High School, 2012: Looker is an athletic outfielder/right handed pitcher. At the event he showed one of the better arms from the outfield topping out at 80 mph.

Brayton Nyland, SS/C, Avon High School, 2015: The 2015 showed the ability to drive the ball to all fields with some pop. From the infield he moved well with his arm up to 74 across the diamond.

Kyle Plummer, C/OF, Zionsville High School, 2013: Plummer is a strong catcher/outfield prospect. Behind the plate his pop times sat between 2.07 and 2.16. At the plate when he gets the bat through the zone he has good pop.

Cheaney Roll, 3B, Brownstown Central High School, 2012: Roll is strong third baseman that showed a good glove with his arm topping out at 70 mph. At the plate Roll showed the ability to turn on the ball and produce some pop.

Andrew Sullivan, 3B/SS/OF, North Central High School, 2013: Sullivan is an athletic IF/OF prospect that topped out at 78 mph from the outfield. At the plate he projects to be a line drive hitter.

Adam Taylor, RHP/3B, Lapel High School, 2013: On the mound Taylor is mechanically sound with a fastball in the upper to mid-70s. At the plate he drives the ball well to the right side.

Aspen Taylor, 2B/OF, Linton-Stockton High School, 2013: Taylor is an athletic prospect with a strong arm from both the infield (81) and outfield (82). Taylor also has good speed with the second best 40 at the event at 4.96.
