Preseason All State: 2014 Corner IF Analysis

2013 Preseason All-State Showcase Top 10 Corner Infielders:

1. Max Gray, 3B/RHP, Lawrence North HS, 2014:

5-foot-11, 170 pound junior possesses arm strength across the diamond at 86 mph.  His hands are soft and has the ability to pick it.  Moves well laterally and has a quick, clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball with an overall advanced feel for the position.  At the plate uses a balanced setup with a narrow stance and a smooth load.  His stride is short and showcases an explosive lower half.  He gets to extension and is fluid with his rhythm.  Displays quick bat speed with projectable gap to gap power. 

2. Jordan Young, 1B/RHP, McCutcheon HS, 2014:

6-foot-2, 210 pound junior has wide shoulders with a big, athletic frame.  In the field has a long arm action and was 82 mph across the diamond with carry.  Showcases soft hands and moves well around the bag.  Advanced feel for the position.  At the plate uses a balanced setup with a smooth load.  His stride is short and shows good use of the lower half.  Possesses quick bat speed and a level path to the baseball producing gap to gap power.  Overall good approach and fluid rhythm. 

3. Tyler Smith, 3B, New Castle HS, 2014:

6-foot-3, 215 pound junior possesses an athletic frame with strength.  In the field possesses a quick arm and throws from a high ¾ arm slot at 80 mph.  His hands are above average and possesses good body control.  At the plate shows a balanced setup and wraps his bat during his load.  His lower half is explosive.  Displays quick bat speed with an uphill swing plane.  Produces barrel whip and displays raw power. 

4. Alec Olund, OF/3B, Lake Central HS, 2014:

6-foot-1, 170 pound athlete runs a 6.83 60.  Possesses an athletic frame and athletic actions. In the IF he showcased overall solid defensive actions and was 78 across the diamond. Projects to be more of an OF. At the plate starts with a tall, open setup and uses a smooth load.  His stride is short and possesses quick bat speed producing barrel whip.  The overall approach is advanced.  Gets to extension producing gap to gap power.

5. Matthieu Meihls, 1B, Ft. Wayne Carroll HS, 2014:

6-foot-4, 180 pound junior possesses a tall, athletic frame. Shows good arm strength across the diamond at 80 mph.  Works well around the bag with a solid glove.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup with explosive bat speed.  His stride is short and will wrap his bat during the load.  Shows athleticism throughout his swing possessing raw pop. 

6. Andy Meadows, 3B, Greensburg Community HS, 2014:

6-foot, 191 pound junior runs a 7.09 60.  In the field shows soft, clean hands with fluid footwork and a clean exchange.  Across the diamond he was 74 mph.  At the plate starts with a slightly opened stance with plus bat speed.  His overall approach is good and hits the ball hard with power and gets to extension.  Exit velo of 86 mph.

7. Drew Madden, 3B/RHP, Lawrence North HS, 2014:

6-foot-1, 182 pound junior runs a 6.65 60.  Very athletic, with the ability to pick it.  Displays above average hands with the ability to move well laterally.  At the plate uses an athletic setup with a slight crouch and a smooth load.  His stride is short and displays quick bat speed with a short path to the baseball.  His rhythm is fluid, but will spin off at times.  Shows good pop with some projectable power. 

8. Tony Giannini, 3B/C, Carmel HS, 2014:

5-foot-10, 199 pound junior runs a 7.20 60. Possesses a strong lower half.  Uses a short arm action and throws from a high ¾ arm slot with carry at 80 mph.  Showcases soft hands and quick feet.  Has a clean exchange and makes the routine plays.  At the plate uses a balanced set up and is slightly open in his stance.  Possesses good bat speed and gets to extension.  Behind the plate produced pop times between 2.01-208 with accurate throws on the bag. 

9. Taylor Goshen, 3B/RHP, Ft. Wayne Carroll HS, 2014:

6-foot-2, 230 pound junior has a strong lower half.  In the field showcased a strong, accurate arm at 83 mph with life.  His feet are slow, but displays above average hands and the ability to make the routine plays.  At the plate starts open with a short stride. Possesses quick bat speed and gets to extension producing projectable power. 

10. Zach Milam, 3B/SS, Terre Haute North HS, 2014:

6-foot-3, 170 pound junior runs a 7.22 60.  Has a tall, lanky body.  In the field throws from an over the top arm slot with carry at 78 mph.  Shows good accuracy with his throws.  His hands are above average and shows fluid footwork with a clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball.  At the plate starts with a closed setup, but his lower half is inconsistent.  His swing path is uphill and shows some stiffness within his rhythm.  Barrels up most balls, producing line drives.
