Preseason Preview: Delta HS

By Ben Grossberg
Lead Scout, PBR Indiana

The Delta Eagles and Head Coach Terry Summers are coming off a good 2012 season in which they went 17-11 overall and 7-7 in mostly a 4A conference, the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The expectations for 2013 are high as the Eagles bring back six starters and five pitchers that saw action last year.

Leading the way for Delta are a pair of Division One commits, 3B/RHP Austin Conway and SS/RHP Alex Maloney. Conway, an Indiana State commit, was Delta’s No. 1 on the mound in 2012 finishing the season 4-4 with a 3.88 ERA. He is also a bigr batin the middle of their lineup after hitting .298 with six homeruns and 23 RBI in 2012.  Maloney, a Ball State commit, is a transfer from Michigan and should help on the mound as well as in the infield.

Delta has two other seniors, Skyler Brand (OF/P) and Alec Taylor (C/OF) that will be relied upon heavily this season. Brand brings back the best batting average from 2012 hitting an impressive .509 with 24 RBI, and will also be counted on to log some innings on the mound. Taylor had a good year as well in 2012, hitting .337 with 21 RBI.

Delta will need production from three players that saw quality varsity time early on in their high school careers. Junior Rob Fox (1B/P) was a key for Delta’s success in 2012 in the lead-off spot hitting .396 with 21 RBI and seven doubles. Trey Bland (OF/P) and Cade Jones (IF) both gained a lot of varsity experience last season and their production will be important for Delta's success in 2013.

Delta had an early exit in last year's state tournament, but with the talent they bring back this year and the transfer of Maloney they should be one of the favorites to come out of Sectional 24.
