Preseason Underclass Preview: Corner Infield Analysis

The Inaugural Preseason Underclass Preview took place on Sunday, February 22nd, at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, IN with a total of 86 underclassmen in attendance; 53 2017's, 26 2018's and seven 2019's.  Below we take a look at the 24 corner infielders who attended the event. 
  

Top 5

Caleb Brenczewski, 3B, Fishers HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, strong, physical frame.  Showcased average hands in the field.  Lacks foot speed, flat feet.  Strong, accurate arm with carry across the diamond at 88 mph.  Offensively, hits from a balanced setup using a short stride.  Good balance.  Above average bat speed with a good approach to the ball.  Shows present power to his pull-side.  Consistent hard contact.  Recorded a high exit velo of 85 mph.  

Trenton Stoner, 3B, SB Clay HS, 2017: 6-foot, 185 pounds, strong, physical frame.  Possesses sure hands at 3B.  Moves well, quick, clean exchange.  Ability to throw from multiple arm angles.  Across the diamond was 76 mph.  At the plate hits out of a tall setup. Loads up. Stride is short, hips explode.  Showcased quick bat speed with barrel whip.  Shows present power to his pull-side.   Rhythm is a little choppy.  Recorded a high exit velo of 85 mph.  

Chad Garisek, 3B, Zionsville HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, ran a 7.26-60.  Shows good athleticism at 3B with soft hands and fluid feet.  Strong, accurate arm across the diamond at 80 mph.  Offensively, hits from an athletic setup.  Leg kick, short stride.  Closes himself off at times after the stride.  Loads back, slightly uphill path.  Possesses good bat speed, consistently made hard contact.  Needs to improve his feet at the plate. Recorded a high exit velo of 84 mph.   

Matthew Wolff, 3B, Fishers HS, 2018: 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, showcased average hands at 3B.  Clean exchange.  Needs to play through the ball more, tendency to be flat footed.  Strong , accurate arm across the diamond at 84 mph.  At the plate starts in an athletic setup, slightly open.  Smooth load, leg kick.  Good use of the lower half with good balance throughout his swing.  Good approach to the ball with some bat speed. Showed gap to gap power with good rhythm.  

Nick Brier, 3B, Zionsville HS, 2018: 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, ran a 7.25-60.  Possesses athletic defensive actions with soft hands and fluid footwork.  Exchange is quick and clean.  Across the diamond was 77 mph from a short high ¾ slot. Athletic defender.  Offensively, starts open and loads back.  Uses a short stride with good use of the lower half.  Possesses quick hands and good approach to the ball. Hands get low.  Line drive hitter, barrels up the baseball.  Fluid rhythm.  Recorded a high exit velo of 80 mph.

Nicholas Coy, 3B, Center Grove HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, ran a 7.56-60.  Defensively at 3B possesses average hands, hard at times.  Slow feet, fields it deep.  Across the diamond was 69 mph. At the plate hits from a balanced setup using a long stride.  Dives during stride, hits off front foot.  Long, uphill path to the baseball.  Lacks balance.  Recorded a high exit velo of 75 mph.   

Brayden Deweese, 3B, Western HS, 2017: 6-foot, 170 pounds, ran a 7.69-60.  Raw actions at 1B with hard hands and slow feet.  Across the field was 71 mph.  Offensively the LHH hits from a balanced setup.  Stride is short, average use of the lower half.  Smooth load. Good balance in the swing.  Level path to the ball producing line drives.  Stiff rhythm.  Recorded a high exit velo of 72 mph.  

Brady Fentress, 1B, South Dearborn HS, 2018: 5-foot-9, 160 pounds, ran a 7.68-60.  Across the diamond from 1B was 72 mph from a short, ¾ arm action.  Offensively, hits out of a slight crouch setup, smooth load.  Stride is short, leg kick.  Swing is short and compact, produces line drives.  Good rhythm.  Recorded an exit velo of 72 mph.  

Chris Fundich, 1B, Lake Central HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 210 pounds was 74 across the field from a long, ¾ arm action.  Slow actions defensively.  At the plate the LHH hits from a slight crouch setup, loads back.  Short stride.  Poor balance, over rotates with the lower half.  Max effort swing, gets to extension.  Choppy rhythm.  Recorded a high exit velo of 88 mph.   

Garett Hill, 3B, Center Grove HS, 2018: 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, ran a 7.44-60.  Fields the ball deep.  Flat, heavy feet.  Overall slow actions.  Across the diamond was 68 mph.   At the plate starts in a balanced setup.  Drops hands and eye level during the load.  Consistent hard contact with some bat speed.  Gets to extension.  Good balance throughout.  Recorded a high exit velo of 78 mph.  

Conner Hoffman, 3B, Lake Central HS, 2018: 6-foot, 174 pounds possesses an athletic frame.  Slow actions defensively with average hands.  Plays on his heels.  Across the diamond was 79 mph from a long arm action.  At the plate the LHH hits out of an open stance, short stride.  Loads back.  Choppy rhythm.  Average bat speed, long path to the ball.  Recorded a high exit velo of 77 mph.  

Ty Lautenschlager, 1B, West Vigo HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 240 pounds.  Average hands at 1B with slow feet.  Exchange was clean.  Plays through the ball well.  Across the diamond was 80 mph with carry.  At the plate the LHH hits from a slight crouch setup, hunched over.  Stride is short, tendency to spin off the ball.  Possesses average bat speed with an uphill path.  Recorded a high exit velo of 80 mph.  

Andrew Lawvere, 3B, Eastbrook HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, ran a 7.95-60.  Strong, accurate arm across the field with carry at 84, short arm action. Possesses average hands in the field.  Clean exchange.  Feet are heavy. Average actions. Offensively, starts balanced with a wide base.  Loads back using a short stride.  Good use of the lower half and good balance throughout the swing.  Possesses above average bat speed with some barrel whip.  Recorded a high exit velo of 84 mph.  

Dallas Matlock, 1B, Southport HS, 2018: 5-foot-10, 145 pound 1B was 62 across the diamond from 1B.  Average hands at 1B, clean exchange.   Offensively, the LHH starts balanced and uses a short stride.  Loads back.  Choppy rhythm, bat drags through the zone.  Recorded a high exit velo of 74 mph.

Wendell Mosteller, 1B, Avon HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 185 pounder was 74 across the diamond from 1B from a long, ¾ arm action.  Plays on his heels, average hands.  Offensively, the LHH hits out of a slight crouch setup and starts closed.  Short stride. Hips fly open, causing him to continually pull the ball.  Recorded a high exit velo of 81 mph.   

Daylan Nanny, 1B, Plainfield HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 168 pounds, works well around the bag at 1B.  Plays through the ball well, clean exchange.  76 across the diamond from a long arm action.  At the plate, the LHH hits out of a balanced setup.  Smooth load with a short stride.  Possesses above average bat speed with a good approach.  Long path, gets to extension.  Fluid rhythm.  Line drive hitter. Recorded a high exit velo of 83 mph.  

Gabe Reel, 3B, Hamilton Heights Hs, 2018: 5-foot-10, 165 pounds.  Heavy feet at 3B, average hands, slow actions.  Across the diamond was 69 mph.   At the plate hits from a narrow, crouch setup.  Loads back using a short stride.  Average use of the lower half with average balance.  Short, compact swing.  Recorded a high exit velo of 75 mph.

Trevor Reynolds, 1B, Greensburg HS, 2017: 6-foot-3, 188 pounds.  Left handed 1B was 71 across the diamond from a long, ¾ arm action.  Offensively, the LHH hits out of a slight crouch setup using a short stride.  Over rotates with the lower half.  Uphill swing plane lacks barrel whip.  Recorded a high exit velo of 75 mph.  

Brevan Rivers, 3B, New Castle HS, 2019: 5-foot-10, 165 pounds.  Showcased hard hands and slow actions at 3B.  Across the diamond was 72 mph.  At the plate hits out of an open setup.  Hands are high.  Minimal load, dives during his stride.  Partial use of his lower half.  Fair balance throughout the swing.  Average bat speed.  Recorded a high exit velo of 73 mph.  

Collin Stanifer, 1B, Penn HS, 2018: 6-foot-3, 165 pounds, long, lanky frame.   Left handed 1B showcased raw actions at 1B, hard hands, slow feet.  Across the diamond was 68 mph.  At the plate hits out of a tall setup.  Partial use of the lower half, good balance.  Flat bat through the zone, good approach.  Recorded a high exit velo of 69 mph.  Ran a 7.55-60.

Nathan VanDeventer, 3B, Columbus North HS, 2017: 6-foot, 160 pounds, possesses average hands in the field.  Tendency to play on his heels.  Above average arm strength, 82 across the field with accuracy.  At the plate hits out of a balanced setup.  Hands start low. Uphill swing path.  Lower half needs refined.  Registered a high exit velo of 81 mph. 

Zach Wells, 1B, Center Grove HS, 2017: 6-foot-3, 230 pounder possesses a strong frame, with a strong lower half.  Raw actions at 1B.  Across the field was 82 mph.  Offensively, hits from a balanced setup, loads back.  Short stride. Average use of the lower half with good balance throughout his swing.  Above average bat speed, level path, gets to  extension.  Showcased gap power.  Recorded a high exit velo of 87 mph.   

Rhett Wintner, 3B, Carmel HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, big physical frame.  Clean exchange at 1B.  Fields it deep, flat feet.  Long arm action across the field at 82 with average carry.  Offensively, starts slightly open.  Minimal stride.  Smooth load.  Above average bat speed, gets to extension.  Gets long at times.  Hard contact.  Recorded a high exit velo of 88 mph.  

Michael Wyman, 1B, Center Grove HS, 2018: 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, raw actions at 1B.  Lacks arm strength, 62 across the diamond.  Best tool is his bat.  Hits from a crouch setup, loads back.  Average use of the lower half.  Possesses some bat speed with a good approach to the ball.  Showcased some power to his pull-side.  Consistent hard contact.  Rhythm is choppy.  Recorded a high exit velo of 77 mph.
