Q&A with 2015 Dayton Commit; Sam Claycamp

By Phil Wade

Executive Director, PBR Indiana

Sam ClaycampSam Claycamp, a 2015 infielder out of Columbus East High School, recently committed to the University of Dayton and Head Coach Tony Vittorio. The 6-foot-3, 210 pound senior possesses an athletic, strong frame with soft hands in the infield.  Offensively he uses an agressive approach with a quick bat and occasional homerun power.

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose the University of Datyon?

Claycamp: I wanted to play D1 and as close to home as possible so I had about 5 colleges at the top of my list with Dayton being one of them that had a good program that I wanted to major in. Once I visited the campus and met with the coaches I knew it was the right fit for me.

PBR: Where did they first see you compete?

Claycamp: They came to watch me play this summer at a few tournaments.

PBR:  When did you take your first official visit to Dayton

Claycamp: I took my visit on July 21st.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus

Claycamp: Coach Vittorio expects me to be able to come in and hopefully start my freshman year at 2nd base.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Claycamp: I also considered Ball State, Eastern Ill, Franklin, Danville & Wright State.

PBR: Who did you play for this summer? Talk about your experience playing for them.

Claycamp: I played for the Indiana Jaguars this summer, Adam Sanders was the coach, and the experience was great! We won two tournaments at Butler and Louisville and finished 2nd in a wood bat tournament at Butler. We finished the summer 25-9 and I hit 8 Home runs with 36 RBI and a .380 average.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Claycamp: My Dad has been the biggest impact on me for baseball.

PBR: What were your stats at Columbus East last spring?

Claycamp: I finished the season with a .300 average and 3 home runs. We played one of the toughest schedules in the state at East this year.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you've faced in Indiana?

Claycamp: Probably Danny Ayers last year and Ashe Russell this year.
