Q&A with 2016 Illinois State Commit; Braden Niksich

By Phil Wade

Executive Director, PBR Indiana

Hobart High School right-handed pitcher Braden Niksich gave his verbal commitment to Illinois State University.  Niksich, ranked No. 24 in Indiana's 2016 class, increased his stock this spring with a fastball up to 87 mph with good command.  He throws a 71-73 mph curveball with potential of being a good out pitch at the next level along with a mid 70's changeup with some sink.

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose Illinois State?

Niksich: I ultimately chose Illinois State because of the coaches. They made me feel comfortable during my visit and I saw myself playing for them at the collegiate level.

PBR: When did you take your first visit to Illinois State?

Niksich: I took my first visit Saturday August 23rd.

PBR: Where did the coaches first see you compete?

Niksich: I believe they first saw me throw at a tournament at Grand Park in Westfield.

PBR: What do the coaches expect from you when you first arrive on campus?

Niksich: The coaches expect me to come in and work hard and hopefully pitch for them Freshman year.

PBR: Were there any other schools you were considering?

Niksich: I was considering Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Iowa.

PBR: Who did you play for this summer and what was that experience like?

Niksich: I played for the Illinois Sparks this summer. It was a great experience. I played against top talent, had wonderful coaches, and had numerous colleges interested in me because of them.

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you've faced within the state of Indiana?

Niksich: The toughest hitter I've faced would have to be Alex Del Rio from Munster.

PBR: Now that you've committed, what are your goals going forward as a HS player?

Niksich: My goals going forward are getting bigger and stronger as well as a state title.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Niksich: My pitching coach, Dave Waddell, had the biggest impact. He made me a much better pitcher and contacted numerous schools for me.

PBR: What were your stats last spring at Hobart?

Niksich: My stats last spring: 30.1 IP 2.54 ERA 37 K 13 BB
