Q&A with 2015 Ohio State Commit Owen Young

By Phil Wade

Director, PBR Indiana

Owen YoungMidwest Future Games Team Indiana member Owen Young committed to Ohio State University and Head Coach Greg Beals yesterday.  Young is currently ranked No. 34 in Indiana’s class of 2015, but possesses the tools to be a Top 20 player when it’s all said and done.

Young’s make up is very projectable with a tall, athletic frame and thick bloodlines at the professional level.  The 6-foot-3, 185 pound first baseman out of Alexandria-Monroe HS is the son of former major leaguer Dmitri Young and nephew of Delmon Young, currently with the Baltimore Orioles.

We had the chance to chat with Young shortly after he committed to the Buckeyes.

PBR:  Where did Ohio State first see you compete?

Young: The first time they saw me play was at the Top Prospect Games at IU.

PBR: Any other schools you were considering?

Young: I was also looking at Dayton and Xavier.

PBR: What does the coaching staff at Ohio State expect from you when you first arrive on campus?

Young: They expect me to come in and compete right away and help them win.

PBR: When did you take your first official visit to Ohio State?

Young: It was actually last night (Tuesday).  I watched the basketball game and it was crazy!  I loved the energy.

PBR: You were a member of Team Indiana in last year’s Midwest Future Games, describe that experience.

Young: It was the best weekend of baseball I've ever had.  I didn't play my best, but it was great meeting all the other guys.

PBR: You have thick bloodlines in professional baseball, how has that impacted your career so far?

Young: Both my dad and uncle are very supportive of me and what I do.  Honestly, it’s very motivating seeing what they have and what they've done to accomplish what they have.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Young: So many people, obviously both my mom and dad.  My uncle Delmon has been great.  All my coaches and teammates, everyone has had an impact.

PBR: What is your fondest baseball memory to date?

Young:  It has to be winning a Sectional title last season.

PBR: How have you improved your game since the last time we saw you at the Midwest Future Games in August?

Young:  I’m a lot more confident.  My swing is a lot better and I’ve done a lot of work in the field and with my arm strength.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you've faced in Indiana?

Young: It has to be Brady Cherry.  I faced him my freshman year and he throws really hard.
