Ellettsville – West Vigo traveled to Edgewood on Wednesday afternoon for a battle between two Western Indiana Conference members. Both came into the game undefeated in conference play with their aces on the mound. Senior Reece Phillips (IU commit) took the rubber for the Edgewood Mustangs and Senior Brandon Calleja took the mound for the West Vigo Vikings. It was a great pitching duel between the lefties.

Both pitchers threw up zeros until the fifth inning when Edgewood was able to push across a run. Sophomore Ryan Newman got the offense going with a one out single to left. Calleja attempted to pick off Newman at first, but Newman ran on the move and the throw to second went into left field allowing him to get to third. Calleja would strike out the next batter and got a groundball from Phillips that should have ended the inning, but the shortstop bobbled the ball and Phillips reached first safely allowing the run to score.

One run was all Phillips needed on Wednesday. In the game he gave up just three hits, all singles, and didn’t allow a hit after the third inning in the shutout performance. After the third he allowed just four runners to reach base while striking out nine, he finished the day with 14 strikeouts.

Celleja took a tough loss going six innings allowing four hits, the one unearned run, two walks, and striking out eight.

Edgewood improved to 12-6 on the year and 5-0 in conference play. West Vigo fell to 11-3 and 3-1 in conference.
