Underclass Showcase 7.9.13: Pitcher Analysis

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

Today we take a look at the final position group, the pitchers, from the July 9 Underclass Showcase at Bellarmine University.  A few of the highlights from the pitching portion of the showcase:

Eddie Mathis (2014 LHP, South Oldham HS) showed well again after his performance at the Top Prospect Games Event.  He doesn't light up the radar gun, but Mathis shows very good pitchability and knows how to attack hitters with his stuff.

Kyle Beach (2015 RHP, Floyd Central IN HS) showed the potential to be a high-level pitching prospect with a fastball that touched 87 mph and solid secondary pitches.

Joshua Scheer (2015 RHP, Lone Oak HS) established himself as a potential high-level pitching prospect in the 2015 class with a projectable frame, extremely loose arm, and a fastball up to 83 with hard slider.

Mitchell Jones (2015 RHP Highlands HS) and Aaron McGeorge (2015 RHP Henry Clay HS) established themselves as definite pitchers to follow in the 2015 class.

Hunter Sullivan (2016 RHP Elizabethtown HS) emerged as a potential high-level pitching prospect in the 2016 class.

The following is an in depth look at all of the pitchers that were in attendance at the showcase.

2014 prospects

Eddie Mathis, LHP, South Oldham HS, 2014
6-foot, 165-pound prospect shows long arm action and looseness through a high ¾ slot, fastball sat 81-82 mph, 2-seamer shows some arm side run and throws a very effective cutter that he is able to run inside on right-handed hitters, has very good command of 68-73 mph curveball that has sharp 1/7 action, shows very good pitchability, pounds the zone and not afraid to pitch inside, good upside.

Casey Klein, LHP/1B, Kentucky Country Day HS, 2014
5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect, uses medium arm action from a ¾ to high ¾ arm slot, fastball sat 75-77 mph, 2-seamer shows some arm side run, curveball showed gradual 1-7 action on this occasion at 61-65 mph, showed good command of changeup at 71-72 mph which varied between some cutting action and slight arm side run.

2015 prospects

Kyle Beach, RHP/1B, Floyd Central (IN) HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect with a projectable frame, uses long and loose arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, mechanics stay on-line, occasionally lower half gets ahead of arm leaving the ball up, shows easy effort in delivery, fastball sat consistently 83-85 mph with some arm-side life touching 87 on his last fastball of the day, curveball shows 12/6 action at 65-69 mph, shows good command of changeup with some run and sink at 70 mph, shows good command of splitter at 68-69 mph with some sinking action.  Beach has the potential to become a high-level pitching prospect in Indiana’s 2015 class.

Joshua Scheer, RHP, Lone Oak HS, 2015
6-foot3, 195-pound prospect, very long and projectable frame, uses long arm action through a ¾ to high ¾ arm slot, extremely loose arm, shows on-line, repeatable mechanics, fastball sat 81-83 mph with good arm-side run, throws a power type slider with late bite that sat 76-78 mph, struggled some with command of the slider but it has the potential to be a swing and miss pitch, changeup is fairly straight at 76-78 mph thrown with good arm action.  With his frame and loose arm, Scheer is highly projectable.  It’s easy to see more velocity to come from him in the near future with the potential to be a high-level prospect in the 2015 class.

Mitchell Jones, RHP, Highlands HS, 2015
6-foot, 160-pound prospect with lanky build and projectable frame, mechanics stay on-line, uses long arm action through a ¾ arm slot, good rhythm in delivery, fastball sat 81-83 mph with good arm side run and 2-seamer shows some sinking action, shows good command of a 66-68 mph curveball with sharp 11/5 action, changeup is a solid pitch thrown with good arm action at 70-73 mph with some fade, shows the ability to throw strikes consistently with all 3 pitches, would expect more velocity to come, definite 2015 pitcher to follow.

Aaron McGeorge, RHP/SS/OF, Henry Clay HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 150 pound prospect, shows long and loose arm action through a ¾ arm slot, good tempo in delivery, mechanics stay on-line and are repeatable, fastball shows good arm side run at 80-82 mph touching 83, shows good command of 67-70mph curveball with sharp 11/5 action, good command of 71-74 mph changeup with run and sink thrown with good arm action, pounds the strike zone with all 3 pitches, definite 2015 pitcher to follow.

TJ Satterly, RHP/3B, Male HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 155-pound prospect, lanky frame with good projectability, uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, has a quick arm, fastball shows occasional slight arm-side run at 79-81 mph, pounds strike zone with fastball, curveball shows sharp 11/5 action at 71 mph, gets on the side of curveball at times leaving it flat but good pitch when stays on top, good arm action on 74-75 mph changeup with some cutting action.  Satterly has room to fill on his frame with more velocity potential.

Addison Coffey, C/RHP, Boyle County HS, 2015
5-foot-9, 150-pound prospect, showed longer arm action from previous event, high ¾ arm slot, good rhythm in delivery, repeatable and online mechanics, fastball sat 77-79 mph, has good command of curveball at 67-69 mph and 11/5 action, good command of changeup with some slight arm side run and sink at 74-76 mph, would like to see more velocity difference between fastball and changeup, pounds strike zone with all 3 pitches.

Zachary Voll, RHP, Madison Central HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 179-pound prospect with athletic build, shows good rhythm in delivery, mechanics are on-line and repeatable, uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, arm shows looseness, fastball sat 76-78 mph with good arm-side run on 2-seamer, lacked some command of curveball which showed sharp 11/5 action at 66-68 mph, throws a solid changeup at 69-72 mph with good arm-side run and sink, good arm action on the changeup, should continue to add more velocity with sound mechanics and a loose arm.

Jonathan Dukes, RHP/OF, Muhlenberg County HS, 2015
6-foot, 195-pound prospect, uses long arm action through an over-the-top arm slot, shows online mechanics, some stiffness, fastball sat 79-80 mph and is straight, showed good command of 65-66 mph with 12/6 action, changeup sat consistently at 71 mph thrown with near fastball arm action and is straight.

Matt Frank, RHP, Christian Academy of Louisville, 2015
6-foot-3, 185-pound prospect, good pitcher’s frame, mechanics stay on-line, uses long arm action through a high ¾ to over-the-top arm slot, showed some stiffness in delivery and arm on this occasion, fastball sat 75-77 mph, 2-seamer showed some arm-side run, showed good command of his 62-65 mph curveball with gradual 12/6 action, changeup is straight at 70-71 mph and thrown for strikes.

Brandon Lord, C/RHP, Henry Clay HS, 2015
6-foot-1, 160-pound prospect with lanky build, uses medium arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, a lot of side to side movement in delivery leads to inconsistent release point, fastball sat 78-77 mph touching 78 and is straight, curveball shows gradual 12/6 action at 65-66 mph, tendency to slow arm on changeup which sat 66-68 mph with some slight arm-side run.

5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect, uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, fastball sat 76-77 mph with good arm-side run, lacked command of 68-70 mph curveball burying several in the dirt, changeup is solid thrown with good arm action at 70-71 mph with some arm-side run and sink.

Michael Reynolds, RHP/1B, DeSales HS, 2015
6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect with good frame, has some projectability, uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot to produce a 77-80 mph fastball touching 81, lacked command of curveball and slows arm, tendency to get under the curveball leaving it up in the zone with minimal action at 54-60 mph, changeup is straight at 74-75 mph.

2016 prospects

Hunter Sullivan, RHP, Elizabethtown HS, 2016
5-foot-10, 165-pound prospect with athletic build, uses long arm action through a ¾ arm slot, occasionally hips fly open a hair early causing inconsistent landing point, fastball sat 81-83 mph touching 84 with good arm-side run, curveball shows 11/5 action at 68-71 mph, tendency to bury curveball, changeup shows good arm-side run and sink at 71-72 mph thrown with near fastball arm speed, young prospect has a live arm, potential to be high-level 2016 pitching prospect.
