Warren Central RHP Dant Shuts Down LN

Indianapolis---MIC rivals Warren Central and Lawrence North faced each other for a third time this year in the opening round of Sectional 10 at Cathedral.  The two schools split the regular season series, both winning games on the road.  Lawrence North ace Nick Weybright (Dayton) earned the win for the Wildcats in the first game, while Warren Central ace Charlie Dant (DePauw) earned the win for the Warriors the following night at LN.

Last night’s first round matchup featured both aces taking the mound for their respective teams, setting up a great pitching matchup.  Both aces were absolutely dominant through the first four innings.  Neither pitcher allowed a run through four, giving up few hits and not allowing many runners to reach base.  Weybright was consistently 83-86, showing off a nasty cutter and slider.  Dant was consistently 82-83, touching 84 on several occasions, to go along with a solid breaking ball.  It appeared as though the first team to put a run on the board would come out on top.

Warren Central, however, was able to put four runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth.  Josh Piercy (2012) led off the inning a base hit to left, which was followed by hits from Jeff George (2014), Thomas Rae (2012), and Dant. Matt Dunnavant (2012) added a double, scoring the final two runs for Warriors four run inning.

With the Wildcats down four going into the top of the sixth, pinch hitter Max Gray (2014) led off the inning for LN with a line drive up the middle for a base hit.  Gray eventually scored on an error after Ben Seefeldt’s (2012) infield hit cutting the deficit to three.  However, that was the only run LN managed to put across, giving Warren Central the 4-1 win.

Dant pitched a complete game, striking out seven, and allowing just two hits.  Weybright pitched six innings for LN, striking out eight.

Warren Central will take on the winner of tonight’s Cathedral-Arsenal Tech game on Monday at 10 am at Cathedral.
