Ryan CatesSalem, IN – Yorktown traveled to take on Wapahani on Monday afternoon and walked away with a big 12-2 win. Senior Ryan Cates (left) got the start on the mound going six innings to pick up the win. He received a lot of run support with Yorktown scoring at least one run in every inning.

Senior Zeth Tanner got Yorktown on the board in the first with a two out RBI double into the right centerfield gap. Cates scored on the play, after reaching on a two out error.

In the second a couple of young players added to the lead for Yorktown. Freshman Jake Clawson had a one out single and sophomore Jacob Preston followed that up with a no doubt homerun to left field giving Yorktown the 3-0 lead.

Yorktown scored one run in each of their next four at-bats. In the third Senior Kameron Kennedy had a RBI single to left for the fourth run of the game. In the fourth Preston came through again with a RBI double scoring Clawson. An error in the fifth led to another Yorktown run. In the sixth Tanner doubled for the third time bringing in another run and giving Yorktown a 7-0 lead.

Meanwhile Cates cruised through his first five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five in the first five frames. In the sixth he got into a little trouble giving up back to back doubles from Ryan Estep and Taylor McKee to start the inning. Wapahani looked poised for a comeback, but after a long at-bat Cates struck out Wapahani’s three hitter on a ball in the dirt, though the runner on third scored on the throw to first. A passed ball led to another run, but Cates struck out the four hitter and got the five hitter to fly out to end the inning and preserve a 7-2 lead.

Yorktown ended any hope Wapahani had of a comeback with a big top of the seventh inning. With the bases load Senior Austin Stout singled up the middle bringing in the first two runs of the inning. With two runners on, Cates added an exclamation point to the win with a three run blast to left field, giving Yorktown a commanding 12-2 lead.

Tanner would come to the mound in the seventh giving up a leadoff hit, but retiring the next three batters to end the game.
