Area Code Games Wednesday Notebook

LONG BEACH, CA—Here are the highlights from Wednesday’s action at the Area Code Games, which featured five contests…

+ C Tyler Soderstom (Turlock HS, CA) played third base Wednesday with his high school teammate, Cole Carrigg getting time behind the plate. Soderstrom has been showing off his left-handed strength all summer and collected two hits Wednesday. One was a single back up the middle and the other was a missile right at the second baseman, who tried to make a spinning play on it, but was also trying to simply survive. It was 104 off the bat so an error would be harsh to the second baseman and not enough credit for Soderstrom, so he gets a double. He also squared up a flyout to center field that was 94.

+ Carrigg had a couple loud at-bats himself, reaching on a fielder’s choice and then showing a nice in-and-out swing on a double down the third base line.

+ RHP Jackson Fristoe (Paducah Tilghman HS, KY) pitched two strong innings, striking out the side in his second. He was 90-94 with the fastball, but showed an above average slider with sharp tilt that disappeared under bats. It was 81-83.

+ RHP Ryan Delgado (Righetti HS, CA) closed things out for the Milwaukee Brewers with two innings. His only blemish was a walk, which was erased on a caught stealing. He struck out the side in the first inning and added another strikeout in the second. WIth a short arm action, the ball seemingly comes out of his sleeve and jumps on hitters, getting swings and misses at 87-89 mph. He also mixed in an above average changeup at 82-83 and 78-79 slider with hard sweep.

+ SS Milan Tolentino (Santa Margarita HS, CA) made loud contact in his two at-bats with exit velocities of 92 and 93. One was a double play and the other was a single over shortstop. He also made a nice backhand play in the hole and threw on the run for an out at first.

+ 3B Drew Bowser (Harvard-Westlake HS, CA) was 1-for-2 with a double, squaring a ball up at 95 down the third base line in his first at-bat. He then jumped all over a pitch with an exit velo of 98, but the marine layer held it down for a long flyout to left-center field. A little later in the day, or any other ballpark, and it would be a no doubt home run.

+ 3B Coby Mayo (Stoneman Douglas HS, FL) made loud contact all day, squaring up two balls in the Washington Nationals first game, though it didn’t show in his stat line. In their second game, Mayo squared up a single to left field with a 101 mph exit velo.

+ C J.D. Gregson (Wakeland HS, TX) was 2-for-3 with two singles that were 94 and 102 off the bat. The second one was a sweet stroke and laced between the shortstop and second base bag.
