Top Prospect Games Session I: Quick Hits on Some Arms to Know

Chris Fuller
Kentucky Director of Scouting

The first session of the PBR Kentucky Top Prospect Games took place on Tuesday, June 23 at UC Health Stadium in Florence and included many top uncommitted prospects from around the state. All stats and videos from the event have been posted.

The following is a look at some quick hits on some of the event’s standout arms.

2021 RHP Zach Haigis made a jump in velocity as he sat 86-88 and flashed a sharp curveball at 72-74 that has a chance to develop into a power slider. Haigis has plenty of upside in his 6-foot-4, 180 pound frame. He also showed feel for a 78-79 mph changeup.

2021 LHP Aaron Abner showed his best velocity to date touching 88 mph multiple times as he worked 85-88 with occasional arm-side run. Abner also showed the ability to spin an effective 65-70 curveball. Abner has committed to Eastern Kentucky University since the event.

2021 RHP Jake Faherty has yet to work out his command issues, but the arm is electric. His fastball sat 90-92 with elite spin rates up to 2652. He threw two breaking balls at 73 mph, one of which was sharp and in the strike zone with a spin rate of 2758. If he can figure out how to repeat his delivery, there is a special talent waiting to happen in his 6-foot-4, 170 pound frame.

2021 LHP Sam Thompson showed his best velocity to date working 82-85 and touching 86 with arm-side run. The 6-foot-1, 175 pound lefty also showed a late-breaking 76-77 slider and feel for 76-79 chengeup.

2022 RHP Silas Shaffer (EKU commit) shows a quick arm with a fastball that sat 85-87 and a 66-68 mph curveball. The 6-foot-2, 175 pound righty has obvious upside.

2022 RHP Brady Baxter continues to see his velocity climb. He worked up to 86 with a long/loose arm action and showed ability to throw a 67-71 mph curveball for strikes. There is plenty of projection in Baxter’s 6-foot-3, 180 pound frame.

2022 RHP Logan Smothers showed a significant uptick in velocity with a fastball that sat 83-86. While the 6-foot, 170 pound righty tended to miss up in the zone on this occasion, his arm works and he shows some feel for a 69-73 mph curveball.

2022 RHP Chase Alderman didn’t show as much velocity as we have seen from him in the past, but he projects well at 6-foot-4, 178 pounds. His fastball worked at 81-84, and he tended to miss up with his 68-69 mph curveball. The changeup was solid at 74-75.
Spin rartes: FB up to 2192, CB up to 2193

2021 LHP Lucas Litteral worked up to 83 with his fastball and showed a sharp downer curveball at times when it was at its best at 67-71 mph. He’s intriguing given his lanky 6-foot-3, 160 pound frame and spin rates. The lefty possesses big upside, and it wouldn’t be a stretch at all to say a velocity increase is likely.
Spin rates: FB up to 2554, CB up to 2394

2021 RHP Jonathon Stevens was attending his first PBR event and showed and worked his fastball at 83-85 with feel for a 70-73 mph curveball. The 6-foot-1, 165 pound righty  also varies his delivery to create some timing issues with hitters.
Spin rates: FB up to 2109, CB up to 2395

2022 LHP Hayden Smith showed a velocity increase with a fastball that sat 80-83 and touched 84 and showed a slower 60-65 mph curveball that has some depth. The 5-foot-11, 175 pound lefty has an uptempo delivery with some effort.
Spin rates: FB up to 2184, CB up to 1958

2022 RHP Trevor Wilson has a physical presence on the mound at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds. The right-hander’s velocity ranged from 81-85 touching 86 once, and he featured a 74-77 mph slider that had short/late bite.
Spin rates: FB up to 2186, SL up to 2180

2022 RHP Robbie Reed attended his first PBR event and showed an ability to throw strikes with a fastball/curveball mix. The fastball sat 80-82 and touched 84 once, and he mixed in an effective 67-70 curveball.
Spin rates: FB up to 2015, CB up to 2273

2022 RHP Nick Judd showed a slight uptick in velocity touching 85 several times. His curveball ranged from 64-69, and he mixed in an occasional 73-74 mph changeup.
Spin rates: FB up to 1910, CB up to 1868

2022 LHP Garrett Brunstetter was down a touch in velocity from where we saw him in the preseason, but there is still plenty to like in the 6-foot-2, 185 pound lefty. His fastball was up to 83, and he flashed a solid 72-73 changeup. His 62-66 curveball tended to miss up and arm-side on this occasion.
