Underclass Trials: Outfielder Analysis

The Underclass Trials took place over the summer at Northlake Christian School. The event hosted many of the top underclass talent from around the state in a pro style workout including defensive positional workouts, batting practice and 60-yard dash. To wrap up event coverage, we will release a position analysis of all in attendance continuing with outfielders.

Hunter Bethel OF / RHP / Walker, LA / 2022Rankings StateRank: 38 / POS: 12
Physical 6-foot, 170-pound frame. Right-handed hitter stands in the box tall, with good rhythm in his hands, and really delivers the head of the bat to the baseball, produced an exit velocity of 87 mph. Over this summer, Bethel has shown a lot of positional versatility, playing both corner OF spots, both corner infield spots, and catching. Bethel has made a name for himself this summer by combining his athleticism and physical frame with the ability to play multiple positions. Worked out in the outfield with solid actions working through the baseball with average athleticism producing a positional velocity of 87 mph. Ran a 7.45 second 60-yard dash. |
Aiden Colvin 3B / RHP / Benton, LA / 2022Average 5-foot-11, 185-pound frame with present strength in build. Right-handed hitter hits from an upright, narrow base with an open stance using a small leg lift to get back to even. Flashes solid bat speed in a steep path creating quality backspin with gap power and an exit velocity of 84 mph. Solid athlete shows quality actions both in the outfield and infield. Does a nice job of charging the baseball in the outfield as he works through it with clean exchanges into a long arm action and a high-¾ release producing a positional velocity of 77 mph from the outfield. Also worked out on the infield where he showed efficient feet and body control with solid actions into a long arm action and a high-¾ release at 77 mph across the infield. Ran an 7.15 second 60-yard dash. |
Jackson Ford OF / LHP / Pineville, LA / 2022Rankings StateRank: 64 / POS: 18
Athletic 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame. Left-handed hitter hits from a tall, slightly open stance. Knee-to-knee leg kick with solid balance throughout, flashed solid bat speed in a slightly uphill stroke with extension through contact. Line drive type hitter showed a pull dominate approach with strength at contact, posting an exit velocity of 88 mph. Defensively, worked out in the outfield where he flashed athleticism, working through the ball with average outfield actions and clean exchanges into a medium arm circle and a high-¾ release, recorded an outfield position velocity of 78 mph. Solid athlete, turned in a a 7.17 60-yard dash. |
Jude Gremillion OF / RHP / Central, LA / 2022Rankings StateRank: 36 / POS: 11
Solid 5-foot-11, 160-pound athletic frame. Right-handed hitter hits from an open stance with a wide base, using a toe-tap load. Flashed impressive bat speed in a compact stroke with looseness in the hands. Gap to gap approach with a slightly uphill, on-plane path and feel to hit, producing an exit velocity of 84 mph. Defensively, flashed athletic outfield actions, moves around well with efficient footwork and clean exchanges into a high-¾ release producing an outfield velocity of 86 mph. Promising athlete, ran a 6.81 60-yard dash. |
Jax Hastings RHP / OF / Northlake Christian, LA / 2022Rangy 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with some projection left. Right-handed hitter hits from a wide, balanced stance using a lift and replace stride to create solid bat speed in a slight uphill path, producing and exit velocity of 85 mph. Defensively worked out in the outfield where he showed solid actions into a longer arm action and a ¾ release, posting a positional velocity of 75 mph from the outfield. Ran a 7.76 second 60-yard dash. |
Donovan Lasalle OF / 2B / Barbe , LA / 2023Physical 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame. Offensively, LaSalle hits from an upright, balanced stanced with a quiet load and rhythm that allows him to deliver a direct path to the ball, which produces consistent hard contact and an exit velocity of 87 mph. Defensively, LaSalle, who has primarily been an OF, has also shown the ability to play 2B. Flashes athletic outfield actions with clean transfers into a high-¾ release with accuracy and carry from right field turned in a positional velocity of 86 mph. On the summer circuit, we have seen LaSalle show the ability to play the 2B position, which only adds more value to this rising name in the 2023 class from Barbe High School. Ran a 7.20 second 60-yard dash. |
Brandon Levy RHP / SS / Parkway, LA / 2023Physical 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame. Right-handed hitter hits from a taller, slightly open stance using a toe-tap load to into a short compact stroke with quality extension. On-plane path with a gap to gap approach and pull side power potential, registered an 88 mph exit velocity. Showed average actions in the outfield, efficient footwork working through the baseball with clean exchanges into a medium arm action and high-¾ slot with real arm strength and carry on throws, producing a positional velocity of 88 mph. During the infield workout, showed average actions, active but under control feet, hands work well and together with clean exchanges and arm strength across, producing an 87 mph positional velocity from shortstop. Solid athlete ran a 7.29 60-yard dash. |
Jonas Louis Jr. OF / 1B / Thomas Jefferson, LA / 2023Wiry 5-foot-9, 135-pound frame with lots of projection. Left-handed hitter hits from a wide, balanced stance using a simple lift and replace load to start the swing. Flashed solid bat speed for his age with developing strength and a slightly uphill path, producing an exit velocity of 76 mph. Defensively, showed nice outfield actions with smooth actions, clean exchanges into a loose arm action with projectable arm strength while turning in a positional velocity of 70 mph from the outfield. Developing athlete, ran a 7.61 second 60-yard dash. |
Braden McLin 3B / OF / Doyle, LA / 2022Athletic 5-foot-11, 165-pound frame. Right handed hitter who was balanced at the plate with an aggressive back side that produced pop. Toe tap on load and quick to the ball. Showed ability to spray to all fields with a balanced approach. Produced and exit velocity of 94 mph. Smooth up the middle with good hands on the infield. Glove tap after fielding ball and over the top arm actions. Worked around baseball well with good footwork. Positional velocity of 81 mph across the infield. 85 mph from the outfield. Ran a 7.05 second 60-yard dash. |

Small 5-foot-9, 150-pound frame with an athletic build. Right-handed hitter hits from an open stance using a slight forward rock before a leg kick load. Fires off a clean stroke with solid bat speed and a flat, on plane path producing an exit velocity of 86 mph. Solid defender in the outfield with deliberate actions, controlled footwork and clean exchanges into a high-¾ release with accuracy. Posted a positional velocity of 81 mph. Solid athlete, ran a 7.16 second 60-yard dash. |
Mason Morgan C / OF / Walker, LA / 2022Smaller 5-foot-7, 155-pound frame with a lean, muscular build. Right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance using a simple, shifty load into a handsy swing. Middle of the field approach with an ability to hit to all fields producing an exit velocity of 86 mph. Defensively, showed solid outfield actions with clean exchanges into a high release producing a positional velocity of 82 mph from the outfield. Solid defender behind the dish with quality balance, soft hands and quick exchanges into high release with a 72 mph positional velocity and 2.07-2.17 pop time. Physical 6-foot-0, 180-pound frame with an athletic build. Left-handed hitter starts from an slightly open stance using a toe-tap load to get to even. Shows a developing swing with a little effort but flashes advanced bat speed with an on plane path, strength through contact and plenty of power potential, generating an exit velocity of 93 mph. Athletic defender in the outfield. Takes aggressive routes, charging in on groundballs, working through the baseball with clean exchanges into a high-¾ release. Left-handed thrower with quick arm speed, posted a positional velocity of 85 mph. Advanced athlete, turned in a 7.07 second 60-yard dash. |

Right-handed hitter hits from a balanced, even stanc, using a small leg lift load and landing in a wide, strong position. Flashed solid bat speed in a rotational swing with a varied path - mostly flat and on-plane with an occasional steep path. Produced and exit velocity of 81 mph. Solid outfield defender, attacks groundballs working through the baseball with clean transfers into a high-¾ release resulting in a positional velocity of 81 mph. Ran a 6.78 second 60-yard dash. |
Caleb Stelly OF / RHP / Parkview Baptist, LA / 2022Rankings StateRank: 22 / POS: 6
Physical 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame with advanced strength. Right-handed hitter hits from a balanced, athletic setup starting slightly open and using a controlled leg lift to work back to even. Low effort swing with easy bat speed, really commands the barrel with strength through contact, generating an exit velocity of 100 mph. Athletic defender with an aggressive approach, charges hard with sure handed technique and clean actions into a high-¾ release producing a positional velocity of 86 mph from right field. Advanced run tool, turned in a 6.45 second 60-yard dash. Stelly’s tools jump off the charts at you right away when looking at his 60 time and exit velocity. As a hitter, Stelly has really worked on honing in on his approach at the plate this summer, as we’ve seen him really start to consistently barrel up baseballs. |
Brennan Surles OF / 2B / Neville, LA / 2022Physical 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame. Right handed hitter with slight crouch and toe touch in load. Explodes off back side through baseball with line drive bat path with some lift. Showed potential gap to gap power with fast bat. Produced and exit velocity of 89 mph. Positional velocity of 83 mph across the infield. 85 mph from the outfield. Natural athlete with developing footwork on the infield and an over the top arm slot from both the outfield and infield. Smooth hands and transitions on the infield and fast arm actions in the outfield. Ran a 6.81 second 60-yard dash. |
Will Taylor OF / SS / Springfield, LA / 2022Average 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame. Left-handed hitter hits from an upright and balanced stance with loose rhythm in hands. Small leg kick landing in a balanced, strong hitting position. Flashed average bat speed in an efficient left-handed stroke with feel for the barrel. Pull approach with quick hand speed and an on-plane path into high finish, producing an exit velocity 80 mph. Defensively, works through the ball with athletic actions, clean footwork and sure hands. Full arm action into high-3/4 release, produced an outfield velocity of 83 mph. Average athlete, turned in a 6.95 60-yard dash. |
John Alex Walsh RHP / 3B / Alexandria, LA / 2023Physical 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame that has started to fill out. Right-handed hitter stands tall in the box using a knee-to-knee leg lift to create momentum in the swing. Lands firm with balance and strength at contact with advanced bat speed through the zone, registered an exit velocity of 87 mph. Solid defender in the outfield, moves well working through the baseball with clean exchanges into a compact arm action and high-¾ release with big arm strength turning in positional velocity of 90 mph. Also, worked out on the infield where he flashed average actions and footwork, with improved body control, clean exchanges into an easy 3/4 release with carry and accuracy.
